I have a 2012 Ram 1500 with the Hemi engine. A few days ago I started having problems starting the engine. It would just crank and crank but not start up. Then I'd immediately try to start it again and it would start right up and run perfectly. This has happened 3-4 times. So, I'm afraid that at some time I'll not be able to get started at all and end up stranded.
So, I took it to a local mechanic that I trust. One fear I had was that they would not be able to recreate the problem. But they called back and said it was a key fob problem. They noticed that the key fob was also not unlocking the doors properly. They said I would need to take it to the dealer and get a new key fob and have it programmed. Not an inexpensive solution as I understand.
But, I'm wondering if it makes sense that this really is a key fob problem. It doesn't seem to make sense that the issue I've been having, where the engine will crank but not start, is a key fob problem. On the other hand, I understand these key fobs can be problematic and control multiple different things. I do recall in the past having a problem with the key fob where it would lock and unlock the doors without me even touching it, but haven't had that issue in a while.
I would appreciate any thoughts before I take this to the dealer (which is not my preference) and spend a lot of money on something that is not really the issue.
Thanks!
