Step-son is looking for a new truck. He only puts about 7000 miles a year on it and tows an 8000lb camper occasionally. I told him to look into a 2500 but he will be leasing and he said the dealer told him leasing a 2500 isn't a good idea? True?

Yeah I have to agree leasing is a bad idea.

What’s wrong with his 2500?

Leasing is an expensive way to ensure no maintenance costs or any catastrophic costs. But I looked into leasing an f250 and the monthly cost was more than buying and if I bought in the long run I would have paid more for it.

Not sure about ram or his personal finances but I never heard good after my initial investigations.

Current finance rates are 5.9% and lease rates start at 6.12% for 2020 2500 models.

This is my step-son. My son has the 2018 2500. I agree 100% with what you guys say about leasing. I will never do it. But he likes to spend money so his budget won't allow for buying...lol. He wants to stay under $400/month with no down payment so buying is out of the question. I have told him over and over that he is throwing money away but it's his money and he won't listen. He owns about 20 pairs or $150 shoes, 23 guns (literally), and many other 'toys' he doesn't need. He had a 2019 1500 and his wife had about a 2015 Ford sedan of some sort. They traded both in the other day for a 2020 Explorer. And his vehicles have to be loaded so...yeah. I think he is in such a hole now that leasing is his only option.

Buying a used 2000 Corolla is his best option. But seriously, I would be very surprised if he could get a 3/4 ton truck on a lease at that price, but I must admit I don't pay much attention to the lease offers that are advertised.

I leased my truck wish I wouldnt of. I get a truck allowance at work so i justified it that way and if I keep a truck 3 years I'm doing good. Anyways I got a 2500 mega cab 6.4l big horn level 2 sport with 20in wheels for 550 a month with about 4k equity on my trade Getting a 2500 for 400 a month isn't likely to happen I dont think I made a smoking deal but I dont think I'm getting ripped either. Sticker was 56k buy out is 35000k after 3 years and 36k miles.

Yeah he was figuring a 2500 would be out of his budget but I told him to ask anyway. I am against leasing but he has convinced himself he is further ahead. I think he had to to be able to justify his getting a new car every 2 years

The best lessons I've learned in life, have been through mistakes. Some are bigger and more memorable than others :buttkick:

Never hurts to try and if he swaps alot he may be ok. But your definitely behind for a while. But if he keep the miles off he may have a small amount of equity when he trades.

Good Luck to him on leasing an HD truck- I looked into leasing and the rates were higher than purchasing. I leased my 1500 because there were plenty of incentives and bought it out at the end of the lease ...not so much on the HD trucks. The manufacturers know that they don't need to incentivise the HD truck crowd because they typically need the truck for work and are willing to / have to pay for it. The 1/2 ton truck market is a different world.

We lease one vehicle at all times (per the accountant) because my wife's small company needs writeoffs, leases are great tools for that purpose. Outside of that circumstance, I would not lease a truck, def not an HD. Just my .02.
