I made no assumptions. I only spoke with regards to the quoted statement. I wasn’t worried or concerned about you as an individual or questioning your experience or driving skills.

Like you I hold a commercial or class A and have for many years before getting into pick up truck RV transport. Had to slide tandems regularly in order to meet state scale houses axle limits for safety but didn’t know the how to for fixed axle & bumper pull trailer axle weights stability safety adjustments. So certainly even having a CDL doesn’t equate knowledge & experience for this type of towing.

The post is just to be an information benefit for you and readers in general because there is so little good setup advice out there and so much mis prioritized what’s your payload sticker say advice.

Only problem is the truck being so stinking tall, and not being able to get the nose down more on the toyhauler.

Mine tows my 42' 5th wheel. I do have 4.10 rear, but eventually plan to go 4.88 or 5.13.

Dry weight is about 13.5k but I dont load up much at all when camping. I did however tow it back home to WV from GA fully loaded. It did fine except for fuel economy. But it's a large displacement V8!

Pin weight I don't have an exact number, but it is around 2200-2300 lbs.
The GVWR is 15,500 lbs, but I'm never anywhere near loaded that heavy.

I did go to 4.88s last January. My truck drives so easily now, especially empty. It helped my towing, but eventually I will go to a 3500 Cummins.

Towing 15k in mountains and switchbacks with the old transmission & 3.73s would suck. Going to 4.30s front & rear would help a lot but would likely be expensive and eat even more fuel on the highway. Doesn’t fix bad gear stepping either. You might compare that to trading for an 8 speed with factory 4.10s. Might be cheaper with better results towing & non towing. The 8 speed is substantially better, gear stepping & more.

With Fords new 7.3 & GMs new 6.6 gassers anybody heard anything about FCA opening it up from the 6.4/392 to the 7.0/426? The 6.4 is rather weak compared to the new 7.3. Lol plus it would be cool to have a 426 Hemi small block. :D

295845DD-043B-4CF8-BB2C-7FB35BBB2A63.jpeg Just pulled my Toyhauler in severe winds. I never went over 60 as it was feeling a little squishy rear end. Truck and trailer stayed straight but the rear didn’t feel planted.
We are parked now and the wind is shaking the trailer allot.
Trailer is around 12,000lbs.

6.4 hemi
2021 Laramie, 2017 Cougar, 2019 touring 850. The hemi with the 4.10's is the best pulling truck I have owned. Goes up the mountain very well with gross weight of 18,000.

2500 6.4L Hemi 4.10's 'Off-Road'
Step-son bought a 2021 Grand Design Imagine 3250BH back in March. I towed it back from Canton, Ohio to Pittsburgh (100 miles) with my 2018 2500 6.4 4.10's. Towed great. We weighed it when we left the dealer. TT weighed 9300lbs.

Also weighed my boat this spring. Boat and trailer was about 8800lbs. We have a hill here called mile hill. About a 7% grade. I was almost stopped at the bottom and maintained 45MPH the whole way up with only about 1/2 throttle. Coming back down my truck stayed under 45 MPH. Actually had to give it a little gas to keep up to speed limit. Never had to touch the brakes the whole way down.

First set of pics are the 9300lb TT and 2nd set is my boat.

Oh...first pic was truck with just me in it but when we weighed the TT there were 2 others in the truck so add another 420lbs to the truck weight in the first pic

I tow a Grand Design Transcend 247BH. Towed it from Central TX to Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce, Silverton, CO and back. Truck did great.

Was towing a 31ft TT with a loaded weight of 8K with zero issues & upgraded to a 11,300 lb with a 2300 lb pin weight . 373 gears . The Hemi let me know it was back there but towed it fine . 9.5 Hand calculated mpg towing the 5th wheel back 117 miles to the house in the Texas Hill country

I towed our 38' 5er through some small mountainous highway (WV Turnpike) over Labor Day. Fully loaded it weighed in at 13,700lbs. With only the 3.73 gears I was really surprised at how well it towed. It stayed in 4th & 5th most of the trip. One thing I thought was kind of weird was sometimes on a down shift it would drop 2 gears at once! It was doing this going up hills & down hills. The engine did a great job of keeping my speed down going down the hills. Just had to tap my breaks about every 50 yards or so. I was also amazed of what little the truck squatted. When I brought the trailer home unloaded it only dropped about 2". I went ahead & installed airbags because I had already bought them, but probably didn't need them.
Same on our 2015 6.4 Hemi Ram 4x4. Had airbags installed just in case. 10lbs on way to dealer & was amazed how little the truck squatted with 2300 lbs. On it . Was a little squishy on the tow back home (117) miles through the Texas Hill country. Gonna try to run the pressure on the bags to 30 psi. next time we tow . Towed / Stopped the 11,300 lb Montana 5th wheel with ease.

Go drive your 6.4 w/3:73’s and around 10,000 lbs trailer (preferably a 5th wheel) from Cheyenne Wyoming to Laramie Wyoming and report back how you did. It sucked for me. Spent half the time in 4th gear going up that pass. Will never do that again.
