Ok for those that have run a higher stall converter what are the downsides to towing mainly?

What brand of converters has anyone used? Moe's has offerings in the $600 range while others have them north of $1300.

For me I'm looking to match my aftermarket cam to the stall requirement so that I get maximum benefit. I'm looking at something in the 2600 stall rpm range along with a jay greene camshaft to match.

I'm sure I can find answers in other locations but for the sake of a good conversation please do share your personal experiences of what you liked, didn't like etc.

If it's an 8 speed check out putting a 1320 Challengers convertor in.It's a factory high stall convertor. Cheap isn't really the way to go on a convertor if you want to tow with the truck

Following as well. Can't seem to get ahold of Matt at Moes for the last 3 weeks. Circle D recommended a 3200 stall for me (occasionally tow a 3000lb trailer, 8 speed 3.21 gears.) I am planning a Whipple in fall.

Sounds like a beast.

I'm not trying to go cheap. I'm trying to understand what $1300 with say paramount vs edge racing one at $600 gets me. If it's worth it I'll buy it but I'm looking for first hand experience.

Any one that goes with a higher stall converter for the street better add a cooler as they make more heat

So I'm sort of new to the world of higher stall converters. I have a hard time grasping conceptually how they work and why more torque affects them the way they do. I have a high stall Circle-D on my truck now, installed a few months ago. It's a high-stall converter (3,600-3800), and I run at a bit over 500 RWHP.

My experience has been exceptional with this new converter. I don't really notice higher trans temps (maybe a few degrees?), and I don't know when this thing locks up, but my MPG seems to be unaffected, and I haven't noticed any issues towing. I only tow a 16' tandem axle with a 3,500 # tractor on it, but have made numerous highway runs and honestly I can't tell any difference other than in towing mode it seems to run just like before. Drivability has been great too, I notice a bit more RPMs before shifting when just accelerating normally in 1st and 2nd, but it's not annoying or anything.

Overall a QUALITY converter will make the truck respond much better and in my opinion I wouldn't hesitate to do it again even if I towed a bunch.

Ask Jay......he recommended Circle D with the 6-speed......maybe different for the 8-speed.
Circle D will ask for weight pulling & engine specs for stall size.
Cooler not necessary for anything under 3000k stall.
I would say any towing over 3,000lbs 2600-2800 stall.

I will ask him. But the man is busier than the rest of us. I also wanted to see if any members here run them or not. Looks like no one has.

Running a Circle D 3000 stall on a Greene 1.5HLv2 cam with .456 gears on 35" tires with the 65RFE & tow less than 3k.
I assume you have the 8-speed so you shouldn't need stall unless you go with a larger cam than mine........ but if you did it would hurt your towing performance ........ smaller Greene .5HLv2 recommended for towing
Only guys I see running stall on the 8HP70 are on the strip to improve their 0-60' launch.

Any particular reason for Circle D vs other offerings?

I run a 1.5HL Greene cam,and i wouldn't call it a great cam for towing,i'd lean towards Jays .5HL cam. That's in a regular cab shortbox with short tires that turn my 3.55's into the equilevant of 4.00's,and the truck off the bottle with a stock convertor leaves a bit to desired under 3,000 rpm.Truck actually needs probably a mininium of a 3200 stall to be a little more street friendly when i'm not feeding it nitrous,on nitrous the stock convertor is pretty good, not what i'd call tow friendly though

Thanks guys. This does help a ton.

Crazy thing is 8speed runs at 190° F all day long. When I get this converter it will finally be time for transmission fluid change.

Just for clarification, you’re saying the .5 Greene cam would be fine without a higher stall for towing? I would think that it would benefit some to have a little higher stall than factory to get to where we making power. I think the OP is lifted too with larger tires as I and it would have to help right?

Read the heater bypass thread if you have the 8 speed, your transmission temps will thank you.

Convert, for now.
Engine
small
Yes, keep the temps down, I used to run a Chevy daily, 3500 stall and 4.11's...a GOOD tranny cooler is a must.

Always heard good about Circle D.

Jays small .5 cam is what he reconmends for the stock convertor,as it's power band isn't really all that much differant from the stock cam,it's basically a torque cam, that pulls good off idle. You could add a little more convertor with it,but probably not much more then 2600 to 2800 at most. The convertor out of a 1320 Challenger or an early 14 to 16 SRT Jeep would be a great addition to the .5HL cam. After 16 the SRT Jeeps lost the factory high stall convertor, and it's not available anymore, but the 1320 Challengers convertor is still available.
