Hi

My 2015 truck 5.7 has a lifter failure (cylinder #5). It has 200K and I have two options:

1- Replacing the whole engine with low mileage one (50K) will cost me 2k. 1 month warranty. (include labor and everything).

2- Replacing camshaft, 16 lifters, oil pump, and timing chain. Will cost me between (2200-2500).

For option #1, I am afraid to get lifter failure again after some miles.

For option #2, Can I replace just cylinder 5 lifter instead of all 16? Can I install 6.4 camshaft (cheaper than 5.7) with 5.7 spring and pushrod. Do not want to delete MDS.

Thoughts

Option two might be about the same cost but there will be more labor involved and you'll still have a 200K mile rotating assembly. Granted there's no guarantee but the 50K motor has better odds.

That's a really good price.

You said "Replacing", surely that price doesn't include the remove/install labor? That's kinda a too good to be true price.
include everything

Just did the Cam swap myself with non MDS lifters, high volume oil pump, and MMX NSR NTR camshaft. Cost me around ~$1800. If they did it for 2K i would be very skeptical.

While the new/used 50k engine is still out, replace the cam and lifters and install a Melling oil pump. Then install and give it hell.

Please take the time to make 100% sure it is not a broken valve spring.
I have been exactly where you are.
The repair shop and all the people that looked at my truck, were sure I needed a new cam and lifters.
I took it home and started to do the project myself.
I fix it on the first day for 80.00 after I took the valve cover off and found a broken valve spring.
I replaced the spring, and it started right up and has run perfectly ever since.

Good Luck

You can do the repair on #5,
But if the lifter is bad, what about the cam, and the shinny stuff floating around in the oil.
Check it out and if the lifter is gone,
Check out that low mileage, too cheap motor, why is it so cheap?
Are you sure about 50 k? Or BS?
