I've noticed I have a lifter tapping on startup here lately. After it idles 30 seconds or so, it quiets down.Anyone else have that issue?

From the way your describing it, Sounds like you might have a broken exhaust manifold bolt

2 very common things could cause this. The previously stated exhaust manifold bolt, or a bad check valve in your oil filter is allowing drain back and you're lifters are dry on startup, both are easily and cheaply repaired.

I'm curious. Our oil filters are mounted vertically. Where, exactly, would the oil be "draining back" to? Gravity and all.

It is classic lifter tick your lifters have the same dry condition as all of ours, and many have different tolerances or whatever that makes them tick. Mine did as well, just like yours at startup and as the oil lubes it they quiet down. Redline Oil fixed mine.

2012 shouldn't have that problem. They have the newer bolts..

It's the normal hemi tick. Might used to do when I first bought it. Changed to Supertech synthetic and never happens anymore.

Noticed my 2014 with 2k miles did it last week on the first start of the morning a couple of times. I chalked it up to the oil draining from the top end overnight. Only ticks for about 10 seconds. Switching to Amsoil at first oil change and suspect that will fix it. Used Amsoil in my 01 2500 Cummins since new and alway treated me well for over 200k.

It's pretty loud on start up but settles down pretty quick. I know bout the hemi tick but this just seems abnormal. I'll just run her til she breaks. Lol

Lol, it isn't abnormal it is classic hemi tick. Mine sounded like a meat grinder or sewing machine at startup, had that crap sound until I changed the oil. Listen to my engine now in my sig if you want, very smooth. I would say most guys solve this with good oils, it seams like a few fall through the cracks and have to live with it. Many oils work, but the reason I used Redline was because of it's Moly content, it's function is to coat metal surfaces for dry starts or loss of oil. Read this. Redline and Motul have the largest moly content and group 5 film strength. It is the one investment that pays for itself by immediately doubling your oil change interval, not to mention a cleaner smoother running engine that has no impurities to varnish. Group 5 is the only true synthetic, there is no oil in the making of that oil.

If you do get a top tier oil, get a synthetic oil filter like Royal Purple to go with it.

Some sampling of moly contents are aprx,

Redline -880PPM
Motul -880PPM
Mobil 1 -60PPM
Penzoils
Ultra -60ppm
Platinum -60ppm
Amsoil SS -200PPM +
Supertech -0-

Let me ask a questions. Mine ticks all the time. In fact it gets louder as the engine warms up. What would cause that? Only 21k miles on the engine. I'll take a vid and post it.

99% it is either the lifters or exhaust bolts, that's it. Mine was lifters, no doubt, and started when the engine had 2000 miles or so. What oil are you running and have you tried different ones or are you loyal to one?

I have the 4.7 v8 engine and on cold starts I get some ticking sounds like a churning sound and brought to the dealer after having it for the day he said it's very normal and a lot of rams make some start up noise ? I use Mobil one extended full syn and it still make alittle noise but I have herd it with a lot of 1500 with 5.7 and 4.7 . Can't hurt to have yours checked to make sure it's not something different .

I've tried M1, Amsoil, Redline, Royal Purple. It's not an oil issue. On a cold start the engine is barely ticking. As it warms up it gets noticeably louder and more erratic. Almost a knock, but not quite. And if I'm driving next to a highway barrier wall on my left side, with the window down, it sounds like the truck is a 1983 Chevy with a bad cam and out of timing. lol Something is not right.

What kind of gas do you use??? I had the same thing while I was running a Bullydog tuner on 93 octane while using 91 octane gas. Got a real bad ticking that got louder after warm up and especially loud after WOT.

It is never an oil issue, it is an issue of how these engines are made. However, on some or many occasions oil can fix it. I would even try 5w30 before I gave up on oil, just disable mds.

I run 89 during the week and fill with 91 on the weekends when I tow. Truck is stock, no tune or anything.

I do disable MDS. Doesn't make a difference.

I just know I'll take it to the dealer and the idiots there are going to be like "Welp, the computer isn't saying there's anything wrong so we're not going to do anything." with no regard for the fact that the thing sounds like a rod is ready to break through the block.

Well if you want to get it fixed by the dealer and the problem is as grave as it sounds bring it there, carefully explain the problem and if they still say they cant replicate the complaint have them run a brand new hemi beside yours and obviously they will hear that there is a problem...
