From the way your describing it, Sounds like you might have a broken exhaust manifold bolt

99% it is either the lifters or exhaust bolts, that's it. Mine was lifters, no doubt, and started when the engine had 2000 miles or so. What oil are you running and have you tried different ones or are you loyal to one?
I've tried M1, Amsoil, Redline, Royal Purple. It's not an oil issue. On a cold start the engine is barely ticking. As it warms up it gets noticeably louder and more erratic. Almost a knock, but not quite. And if I'm driving next to a highway barrier wall on my left side, with the window down, it sounds like the truck is a 1983 Chevy with a bad cam and out of timing. lol Something is not right.
What kind of gas do you use??? I had the same thing while I was running a Bullydog tuner on 93 octane while using 91 octane gas. Got a real bad ticking that got louder after warm up and especially loud after WOT.
It is never an oil issue, it is an issue of how these engines are made. However, on some or many occasions oil can fix it. I would even try 5w30 before I gave up on oil, just disable mds.
