I have a 2009 ram sport crew cab i installed a detroit locker in. It seams to be clunky. i expected it while driving in and out of corners when powering, but it clunks going into drive and reverse. when i put it in park it rolls a lot farther before engaging in park. Is this normal? i put it in park and blocked the tires and turned the driveline by hand and the rear end makes a clang sound when i turn it back and forth. A lot more slop than with the stock diff. Hope that makes sense. any help would be great

Full carrier swap, correct?
Sounds like whoever did the installation didn’t set the backlash correctly.
Was gear marking compound used? If so, do you have any pics?

The excess slop you are describing usually means that the carrier is too far away from the pinion gear. But could also mean that the pinion may need to be set deeper. Deciding which is where the marking compound comes in.

I installed it. Lol. Back lash was set at 8. I’ll try and load a couple pics of gear.

I am by no means a pro( it’s been years sense I set up gears) but looks like the pinion may be a bit shallow.

Backlash specs that I was able to find for the 9.25 axle, are .005” to .007”

I wouldn’t think only being .001” over on backlash would cause as much slack as you’re describing. (That’s assuming that when you said it was set to 8, you meant .008”) but it might not hurt to pull the cover and check it again.

That is my plan. I am just not familiar with how the lockers feel. So I thought I’d ask. Thanks for your feed back

Mine clunks a bit going into gear, and has a bit more roll in park. I think it's pretty normal for them.We pulled mine apart and tightened up the backlash at 500 miles as I thought it was excessive, but didn't really change anything.I think that's the nature of them and it's nothing to worry about.Mines in been in for 2 years now, with a pile of track passes ,and it hasn't gotten any worse.

Im not sure if it's the pictures, grease or lighting but the gear wear marks look different than mine when they pulled my 3.92's out in favor of the 4.56's

I never had any clicking or noise with my detroit locker in my jeep. Have a pro check your backlash so you don’t snap ring gear teeth off from too much play just to be safe.
