Long cranking before start.

I have a 2014 ram 1500 with the 5.7 hemi. It has 68k on it. If it sits for a little while after I crank it it takes it about 5 seconds to actually crank up. That’s with just putting the key fob in the ignition or using the auto start. Usually if I put the key in and turn it to on and wait for the dinging to stop it’ll start up every time almost. Anybody have this happen?

Could be many things. If you're not getting any codes, I'd check the fuel pump pressures. After hooking a gauge up, turn the key to "on". The pressure gauge should read 58.0 psi +/- 3.0 psi. Turn key too "off". After 5 mins, pressure cannot drop more than 10 psi. If either of those do not fall within spec, you either have a leak (unlikely) or a bad fuel pump. Like i said, it could be many things, but that is where I would start.

It may be hard to replicate the problem. It only happens periodically. And no codes are getting thrown so I’m not sure what it might be.

Batteries only last just so long. Next time you're in for tire rotation or oil change if you don't do your own, have them check the battery.

If the battery is strong and your not experiencing any other issues such as idle problems, bucking or surging under load, I would suspect the fuel pump isnt holding pressure properly.

Well everything works fine on the truck besides the starting problem never hesitates on anything else just the delayed starting. I was thinking either fuel pump or WIN module

I agree with checking fuel pressure.

It is difficult for dealers to diagnose an intermittent concern if they are unable to duplicate it. If they are unable to witness the symptoms it does pose quite a challenge when trying to figure out the components that are causing it, as I'm sure you understand. If there are any circumstances you are sure you are able to duplicate it, you can provide this insight to the dealer.

I am having this exact issue, I took the truck to the local dealership.
After 4 days they replaced my battery and told me it was good to go.
When I went to fire it up, it wouldn't start (as described above). As I was having a bad day, I decided to just leave instead of letting them know how I really felt. I am going to go borrow a fuel pressure guage from OReily or whomever and see what I'm running there.

It's quite embarrassing to have this happen with a customer in the truck.

I've been chasing this for awhile now, what did you end up doing to fix it?

So, I tried the TIPM fuel pump relay, and the test with the LED but it didn't seem to be an issue. I check my brand new battery in the AMs and its only at 12.6 so last night I disconnected the negative and let it sit over night. Tested the battery this AM and was at 12.8 so something is draining it... hooked it up and went to start it and it fired up. I wonder if its the TIPM fuel relay but its intermittent. I will put the bypass on tonight and check it out. Just updating for anyone with the same issue.

I know it's been awhile on this but did you ever get this figured out? My son's 2014 is doing the same thing.

Could be fuel pump not holding pressure, leaking injectors, bad purge valve.

Does it happen first start of the morning or just after it sits for a few hours?

If it’s first start of the morning the fuel pump is likely leaking down pressure.

If it’s after a few hours it’s more likely leaking injectors or a purge valve.

Of course it could be lots of other things but those are the most common things on these trucks that cause your issue.

Also when you say “crank up” do you mean the engine is cranking over, like an extended crank. Or takes 5 seconds before the engine starts to crank.

This seems to be a consistent problem. I’m both relieved to see I’m not alone, and bummed that so many are having the same issue and no one has had a successful AH HA!
Well, let me toss my hat in-
2014 5.7, 84k miles…Same long crank issue, probably 4-5 seconds before it fires up.
Only happens first start cycle if the day after it’s sat overnight or all day. (12 hours +) maybe. No other issues, no stalls, sputtering, hesitation, rough idles-zip.
From what I’ve read here, the general consensus seems to lead to the fuel pump. Do you think the adding a check valve into the fuel line to prevent drain back is a good solve- or simply setting myself up to be stranded with a dying pump?
You are all secretly my heroes, thanks in advance.

Your best bet is change out the battery first thing, even testing can show false positive. Bad batteries can be the root of so many issues many of which one would not think. And after that check fuel pressure as stated in post #2

I have the same issue, A New battery didn't help. There is no pattern of when it happens. It can sit for days and crank and can long start after a quick stop at the store. Never a code either.
