Been looking around locally at 3500 diesels. One thing I have noticed is all of them have 3:73 rear ends. Would have thought at least 3:92's or 4:10's. Seems weird but must be the times. I tow 6-8 times a year camping with my 35 foot 5th wheel (10,000 lbs) so guess 3:73's wouldn't be to bad. Or is this a bad idea?

So you are looking at 2019 and up.

The 4th Gen had 3.42.

3.92 is a 1500 gear set.

You can get 4.10...but must get the dual rear wheel. Which comes with the 3.73 standard.

3.73 will be fine. And is the only option available for single rear wheel

Was sent info on a dually. 3:73’s on it. I get around 18 mpg with my 6.4 hemi with 3:73’s on highway driving. Around 9 mpg towing my 35 foot 5th wheel.

Your thinking this gas engine. Keep in mind a CTD makes more torque just above idle than the 6.4 does at it peak and the CTD tops over double the Hemi. Part of lower gears is for the torque multiplication the other is raise the rpms to get the engine up in the torque band. The Hemi(429 ft/lbs) torque peak is 4K rpms the CTD (850/1000ft/lbs) is about 1800 rpms.
As for your trailer, even if you had 3.42 gears the CTD will laugh at that 10K load even going up steep mountain grades. My buddy tows 16K behind a 2500 CTD with 3.42 gears, has no problems in the mountains.

A 3500 with 3.73 gears will pull that 10,000 pounds with effortless ease!

Think of it this way........the 1st Ram with Cummins B series engines came with a 3.07 gear ratio axle. Granted, this was with only the old Chrysler TorqueFlite 727 4 speed tranny, but still. I know, because I had one.

Diesel torque curve is low rpm, spark ignited is not.

I had a 2000 3500 with a cummins and POS 4 speed tranny. It sucked. The six speed trannys should fair well but was hoping at least a 8 speed by now. Heck, can get a used rig cheaper than a 1 ton now. Still have my class A.
