when I start my truck in the morning, it has a hell of a clatter that lasts for a few seconds. i am using Mobil1 5w20 as called for. I understand the oil drains down to the pan, but damn...how much damage is this doing? Is it the Mobil1? After truck has been on few a few seconds it goes away instantly. i assume the oil has been pumped up to the top of the motor. is anyone else experiencing this?

Bigdaddy: It is hard to say exactly what is going on...

How long has the M1 been in the crankcase?
also
What brand of oil filter are you using?

My first diagnosis would be to change your oil filter brand to either a Royal Purple-Fram Ultra-Amsoil!-->{First thing I would change}... with your next oil change...
If you just did an oil change, you could just do an oil filter swap...

The Mobil1 has been in for the last two oil changes. It's a Wix filter. The noise goes away in just a few seconds. I'm wondering if I need to use a different oil? Would it do a better job sticking to the upper part of the engine(not very technical terms, I know) rather than completely draining to the oil pan overnight.

In my 2012 with the Hemi I used Amsoil and Wix filters and don't remember the clatter. I would run the oil 10k miles or more with a filter change at about 5k miles and top off with oil and never had any issues.

My truck would do the same thing but very infrequently. Sounds like you are having lifter bleed down. When you start the truck, it clacks due to excessive lash and stops once the oil gets to the top of the motor and pumps the lifter back up. Usually lasts 2-3 seconds and goes away.

300 ml of MOS2 and after about 1500 miles it has completely stopped

Can you tell me more? What is MOS2?

Especially read Clevys post! I have confided in him many times and he has Never sent me in the wrong direction...

I will try to find the Moly link...

Ok This is a bit Long but some Very Good Information on Moly and the Use! Take some time and read what MoS2 is all about BEFORE you use it...

I have read about other engine designs having this same issue {Clatter noise} at start up, then after a few seconds it's gone... This only occurs after the auto has sat overnight or for more then a few hours... Most cured this issue by changing Oil Filters... I have No answer for it... It might be something to try...

I am by NO means saying there is some thing wrong with WIX oil filters... Sometimes this happens... It's worth a shot to try at least 1 of the filters I mentioned... All 3 have a Very Strong Following and Good Reputations to follow...

Well it's time for an oil change this weekend so I'll go with a different brand and see if that works.

I agree about the oil filter. Not all of them have the check valves in them that are exactly for this problem.Lots of filters will fit and some manufacturers may have 2 or 3 that will fit your application, but not all are created equal.

Ok I picked up some more Mobil1 and will get a royal purple filter to go on. I'll report back in a week or so I guess.

My 2011 Ram was noisey on M1. Switched to PUP, noise went away.

Mine also does this on occasion. Only happens when it's been sitting awhile (such as overnight).

I agree with the bad anti drain back valve guess. It's a real long shot, but possibly a loose or cracked oil pickup tube. At any rate, whatever the cause, if it doesn't get found fairly soon, I predict dim future for your engine.

Well my 10 year old and I will be changing the oil probably Monday morning before we wash it. Hopefully a different filter does the trick.

It didn't make that clattering noise on start up this morning.

Start with the different oil filter choice! If that does not help solve the issue... There still might be a couple more things to change to help with this clatter noise...

Using 5w20 PP with Fram Ultra Filter with 5k on engine, with no start up lifter tick.
However, coldest start has been 43F ambient.
Maybe colder ambient temperature starts amplify the noise?
