I remember those days! Interesting that it’s less HP per cubic inch as compared to our hemi with more HP per cubic inch.
Wasn't any muscle car engine that made over 1hp per cube, while the 345/5.7's in the trucks make roughly 1.145 hp per cube, and the 392/6.4 car engines are making 1.24 hp per cube with warrenty no less, and they do it for alot more miles, lol.

Actually, the '56 Chrysler 354 hemi, was the first to break that mark, and there were several 327's that made well over 1 HP per cube, just to name few

There's quite a differance between the old gross horsepower ratings and the net horsepower ratings that are used now.

SOME COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS

Let’s clear up a couple of common misconceptions about gross and net horsepower ratings:

  1. Contrary to some assumptions, net horsepower ratings do NOT measure horsepower at the drive wheels. Both gross and net ratings are at the flywheel and do not reflect power losses in the drivetrain.
  2. Because of the vagaries of the old gross ratings, the widespread over- and underrating of different engines, and the considerable differences in the amount of power consumed by different intake/exhaust/accessory configurations (even for different applications of the same basic engine), there is NO reliable formula for converting gross horsepower to net horsepower or vice versa. Sometimes, the difference is as little as 5–10%; sometimes it’s more than 25%. Unless the factory released both gross and net figures for a given engine (which some did, even in the U.S.), the best you can do is make an educated guess based on state of tune and real-world performance testing — keeping in mind that published road tests didn’t necessarily reflect the performance of cars the average consumer could actually buy.
  3. The ambiguity of gross horsepower ratings means that many pre-1971 American cars were actually a lot less powerful than the advertised figures would suggest. While the late sixties were a golden age of horsepower compared to the late seventies or early eighties, the differences weren’t quite as vast as they appear at first blush. Some engines’ advertised gross horsepower probably exceeded their actual as-installed power by 100 hp (75 kW) or more.

Here's a few tests of the 375hp 327 and other high power Vette's from back in the day.Remember the cars the magazines got for testing purposes were one off cars, basically blueprinted toys, that were usually quiet a bit faster, then what the average consumer could buy out of the dealers showroom. You might say they were over rated,as a stock 5.7 regular cab shortbox truck will run faster numbers while weighing close to 1800 to 2,000 lbs more.If you open up the limiter on a late model truck,it's also just about as fast wide open as the vaunted L-88 Vette was with it's 151 mph top speed. My little shortbox has gone 153 mph, before i chickened out , the road started to get really narrow at that speed, lol

1/4 Mile ETs for 1960s Vettes

Here are some ETs that car magazines reported from their road tests:

1. Motor Trend tested a 1964 model 327 / 375 hp fuel injected with 4.11 gears and turned a 14.2 @100
2. Road & Track, 1964 model 327 / 300 hp automatic did a 15.2 e.t.
3. Car and Driver, 1965 model 327 / 350 hp and 3.36 gears got 14.9
4. Road & Track tested a 1965 model 396 / 425 hp with 3.70 gears and complained about wheel spin and turned a 14.1
5. Motor Trend, 1967 model 427 / 435 hp with 3.55 gears did 13.8 @ 104 mph.
6. Car and Driver 1967 model 427 / 435 hp got 13.6 @ 105.
EDIT:
7. C&D, R&T and MT did 4 tests on 1966 and 1967 427 / 425 hp and the average of those were 13.53 @ 107.6 mph.
8. Car and Driver 1968 model 427 / 400 hp did 14.1 @ 102
9. Car and Driver 1971 model (GM mandated lowered compression beginning with this year) 350 LT1 making 330 hp with a 4 speed and 3.70 gears hustled down the strip at a 14.57 @ 100.55
10. Car and Driver 1971 model LS6 solid lifter 454 / 425 hp with double-disc clutch & 4-speed turned a 13.8 at 104.65 with 3.36 gears.
EDIT: #11. See post later in this thread re the L88.
11. Car Life, model 1969 L88 427 / 430 hp, 3.36 gears, automatic, 14.101 @ 106.89 and top speed of 151 mph.

I agree 100%, apples and oranges in the way they were measured, my point only was the engine did make that much power they way it was measured. Believe me, I agree todays are much better, I don't miss setting up a dual point dist or jetting a carb at all
