It’s even worse if you are out in the bush and the ragity a$$ piece strips out and now you don’t have a nut that any socket will fit

Locking Lug Nuts are….. NUTS!

A thief has ZERO concern for the damage he will do to your truck when he steals your wheels and/or tires. He will zip that “lock nut” right off in minutes with a universal and you’ll return with your vehicle sitting on blocks or on the ground.

If you avoid the thief… your wife will be sitting around the tire store …or on the side of the road because no one can find the “key”.

Do you watch the shop change your tires if they spin the out flimsy case you would never know until you try to change the tire. Then you are in for a pita time. Full steel is the only way to go might be pricey but worth it.

Well they will slow up alot of thieves enough they'll bypass your wheels.
Throw in the fact not many steal the wheels, they steal the whole flipping vehicle now a days.
If you can't hang onto a key for a splined lugnut, odds are you also can't hang onto a 22 mm socket either ;)

The problem is as someone just stated. Shop/dealer work. My wife’s renegade had a flat,( I admit I hadn’t paid much attention to her car. She always went to Ram/jeep dealer. ) I couldn’t believe that EVERY wheel nut on that vehicle, I had to hammer a smaller impact socket over them to get them off. Went out and bought a whole set of 20 from one of the parts stores. Can’t remember the make but yes, one piece chromed. Dortmund, maybe? Nice product. Dealer was the ONLY shop to have taken off wheels and had done so not 500 mls before to rotate and change shocks out for warranty but wouldn’t play ball. If I bought theirs, at $250 they would however as good will fit them! I spend just over $80 I think, with Military, First Responder, senior citizen, Ancient Mariner and anything else they (didn’t lol) give me!

I found buying a 23mm impact socket has done the trick and cheaper than a whole set of new lug nuts.

You can buy 22.5mm sockets,i have a few 1/2 sizes from 18mm to 22.5 mm,they come in handy at times.

My kit is very similiar to this kit

Once they are messed up, you can only get them off with a impact socket smashed over them, or that’s the only thing I could do , if the chrome comes off you can also get an old socket over those too

I just had hell of a time taking one off. Had to get the cap off with some “alternative methods”. The rest are swelling and bought some solid one from Dorman. Hope to get them swapped out this weekend.

Just put the winter tires on,and gotta say i still have no issues with the splined lug nuts i've been using for 10 years now. On the truck and Challenger they got spun on and off every weekend in the summer, and the ones on the truck were still in perfect shape when i sold it awhile ago. They also got taken off and reinstalled with an impact gun ,when you're changing tires on 2 vehicles at the track after dark,i'm not wasting time doing them by hand,as we still had to drive 155 miles home
The key for them sits in a heavy duty baggie in the glove box of all my vehicles, never yet had any issues with losing it.
My 300 also has a locking lugnut on each wheel,as it gets parked in some sketchy area's at times, never yet lost the key to it,as it also sits in the same baggie as the splined socket sits in. Between the splined lug nuts and locking lug nut i can't say as i lose much sleep worrying about the wheels being stolen off it.They're probably safer then if they were on with a normal steel lug nut and no locking lug nut , between the splined nuts and the locking nut,the average wheel thief is gonna find one that's easier to steal the wheels off;)

A key or special socket can be easily lost. I don’t live in a high crime area so I don’t worry about thieves. But I understand the need for security in some places.

The problem with the solid nuts is the chrome is garbage. My new ones I'm pretty sure are one piece, but the chrome chipped off in places after installing them. Yes, I used my impact. That's what I bought it for. Oh well, I got a lot of spares.

For those who have two piece lug nuts you can make your life a whole lot better if you buy a 22.5mm socket. Get one at most any auto parts. Usually it's two sided, but I only use the 22.5.

BTW if you own a basin wrench you can get any lug nut off. Those suckers grab onto anything like no tomorrow. This little 10 dollar tool is for plumbers, but has gotten me out of a few jams on my cars over the years.
