Will a bad MDS solenoid always set off the check engine light ?

Im not sure. Any intermittent mds codes? I'd think if a solenoid was going you'd get a code like: solenoid circuit high, low, or short to ground something like that. What kind of problems are you having that makes you think it's an mds solenoid?

Intermittent roughness that goes away as soon as I deactivate the MDS on steering wheel

Could be mds you are disabling the mds on the wheel by using gear selector and dropping a gear? Also. Try it in tow haul mode. Im thinking it could be mds or possible torque converter, when torque converter is going sometimes you can tell because it will go into lock up and vibrate. But it usually only does this when in the highest gear and then goes into lockup.
