I use an Oil Filter Plug with a T-handle. Pretty simple to use, and I've got pretty big hands.

Has anyone ever figured out how to keep your hand from slipping so bad on the filter after the oil starts leaking
out of it. It takes forever to get it off because of all the slipping on the oil that's now all over the outside of the
filter lol! Using one of the many configurations of oil filter wrenches takes forever too!

I keep a couple pairs of these in the toolbox. Once they've seen enough dirty oil to make them unusable I just toss them and move on to the next set.

Since they decided to put the oil filter in a horrible place and it makes a mess every time I took it off, I decided to do something about it. Took a windshield washer fluid jug and cut to contour the filter/space the filter occupies. Fits perfectly and still leaves room to spin the filter off by hand. With careful maneuvering due to the tight spaces there is no mess left behind. I know I sound like an infomercial but give it a shot. It works wonders!!!

I love this idea... would it work better if you cut off the top part instead of the bottom? reason I'm asking is that youd have to hold that up with one hand.. if it had a flat bottom you could just let it rest there, or does this somehow wedge itself in so you don't have to hold it?

I use a big hose clamp, one that has a plastic knob on it. Talking about my F-150, not my Ram. Just got it last week and doesnt need an oil chg. The clamp is the only wrench needed as long as I'm the one that puts the filter on. The Jiffylube guys torque'em down to much.

I just leave a drain pan under the spill zone and a rag followed by a shot of brake clean to clean the mess. Every other way I try I seem to make just as much of a mess. Especially when I don't notice a hole in the plastic bag until I see the trail. Still a cool idea though and costs nothing to try it.

I use the zip loc bag settup..as others have said trying to keep that filter spinning is a real mother once the oil gets on the outside...I have a remote settup from the last truck that I never put on...to dam lazy to put it on this one...I think i mentioned about an oil change before..something about my turn for you guys to have a chuckle at..at my expense.this was 1 time before the now used zip loc bag...long story short, I grabbed that sucker, started twisting,it fell, splashed in the drain pan, shot oil all over the underside of everything(and me also)..Brake caliper, inner rim,all over steering...needless to say after some very unpleasant words being spoke.some tools thrown...I stopped ,went and mixed up a stiff crown and sprite and just sat and starred at it for spell til my drink was gone..then I was settled down enough for the crappy ass cleanup ahead...lol

Does that actually stop your hand from slipping on the filter?? If so I wonder if those cheap disposable latex gloves would do the same job...

They work pretty well for me, better than just using nitrite gloves since they have a sort of texture to them. I have a nicer set somewhere that I'll put a glove over, but it reduces the grip by a good bit so I just stick with the cheapies.

I found the top to have a little more stability and having the handle there is a big plus. And the handle fits perfectly between the rack and crossmember. The cap allows it to balance in there without tipping over so you can concentrate on getting the filter out after unscrewing it all the way. If I get time tonight or tomorrow I’ll try and get some mock up pictures of how I used it to help aid others to understand the concept a little better.

Hah, sounds like something I would do. I got hot oil all over my left arm last night when the ziploc bag slipped down below the upper part of the filter. Luckily I had cardboard on the driveway. I have done it before with less mess but usually the oil is cool which keeps the ziploc bag from being more pliable. I run the big filter so it's even worse. Usually I drape a grocery bag over the steering rack which helps a lot and forgot to do that.

Ok here we go, remember it’s just for mock up purposes since I’ve already done the oil change. You’ll still get some drips of oil so keep a rag handy. It catches 99% of the oil.

Here is the start, angle it inwards and still has plenty of room to spare

The rear angle, shows how it covers the entire spill zone

Able to wedge/balance it between the rack and front crossmember

With it being wedged in place, it allows the filter to be removed while any extra oil will still drip into the container

Here’s how the high back left on the container still continues to catch any extra oil while being removed

These show that with the filter removed the container can be easily removed while keeping the contents from spilling out

I have not done it on my truck, as I don't change the oil myself any more, but , back when I farmed, on my tractor, if you spun the filter off, you had a gallon of oil all over hell, before you got it off, So I would stick a 5 gallon pail or what ever under it take a large punch and knock a hole in the bottom of the filter and let it drain down for 1/2 hr, very little left after that, BTW that held 5 gallons of oil, big truck held 7 gallons, I found out the hard way just after I bought it, a 5 gallon pail just don't cut it.
But that may not help , as I never tried it with the 1/2 tons. I use to have a heavey pair of rubber gloves with a gritty palm on them, like sand paper and they would work great on oil filters, some of the heavy stuff had large filters

I wish someone made a tap clamp that had tubing to drain the filter to a container sort of like a side tap valve used on A/C refrigerant cans. On our 4Runner it uses a canister filter that has a drain plug and tubing adapter to drain all of the oil out before you unscrew it. Lots of access beneath it but you have to remove a massive skid plate.
