Just came across this Ram Forum site looking to see what others can share about a particular metal clicking noise, when I reverse. It doesn't occur all the time and in fact took me around 4 hours of on and off driving yesterday to finally capture it on video. When it does occur, I do feel some feedback on the brakes/steering wheel. I also do feel some resistance at times when accelerating from a stop and/or while turning. When accelerating, I can only explain that it feels like a tire rubbing or if my 4x4 (4Hi) is engaged, but my Power Wagon is fully stock with suspension and wheels/tires.

I began noticing this at around 14k miles. I took it to the dealership and was told that they were able to reproduce the noise, but was told after that once they jacked it up and brought back down, the noise went away. At this point I'm about to pay to get it diagnosed at a local shop and then ask the dealership to look at what is found as I would like this corrected while under warranty.

I have posted a couple of short videos, that show the metal clicking noise. It sounds to me as if it's coming from the rear of the truck, which is where I mounted my GoPro. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated from this community.

That noise is in the ring n pinion gear. Look at the 2nd video at the 29/33 second spot where you go from reverse to drive. The wheels ain't moving and when the driveshaft goes moves it's small amount you can see and hear it.
When I looked at the 1st video I thought park brakes were sticking but then focused on the driveshaft.

McBroom, Thanks for the feedback. I see what you mean. Do you think I should attempt to record now the transmission side as well?

I would definitely force the warranty on that before your whole rear grenades itself. To me it definitely sounds like a bearing in the diff. I was hoping it was something with your emergency brake but definitely doesn't sound like it in the video.

This is what happened to my Ford 7.3 back in the day with 38s on it with that bearing making a similar noise and eventually giving out. You can see it had enough play to take the teeth off the ring.

OMG, definitely the rear end/DIFF. U need to get that puppy into shop asap, and if U got Warranty, force Dodge to fix it. That puppy gonna grenade some day, may be soon and U sure as heck not want to be running on a Highway. I sure as heck would not drive very far with that, cause I hate to say it, but it is gonna fail, Not a question of IF, BUT WHEN, IMHO...

MCBROOM: U R spot on. I wonder if there is even any OIL in the rear diff??????

Thanks all for the feedback. I've gone and scheduled an appointment with the dealership. I'll post the outcome, in case it helps someone else down the line.

Yeah when mine went up on that 7.3 I had it was only going 15 mph down a mountain driveway and locked up scared the **** out of me. Definitely not worth putting it off. The metal binding noise isn't good for anything under that truck in the driveline.

Man, where were you guys through three years of **** with a lemon, horrible, and I mean horrible dealership (truck came back worse than when it went in every time).

Then I finally had to give up on the truck I ordered, because they lost it at the plant in Satillo. They still have not figured it out and am PCSing from family for a while. Hard to share a vehicle 20 hours away. FCA did offer me an oil change package that I am pretty sure comes with the 2500s anyway.
Would have been cool to have someone escalate something.

The dealership determined, with Chrysler engineers, that all of the rear differential components had to be changed. It was all covered under warranty as the truck was fairly new.
