Hopefully someone on here has some insight into this type of issue. I have a 1998 Ram 1500 4x4 with the 5.9 and 46RE. Lately I have been experiencing this issue where when the truck is about half way warmed up it will start cutting out when it shifts from 1st to 2nd. Acts like either the spark is dropping or fuel is dropping. Push through it until it shifts to 3rd and it stops cutting out. After the truck reaches operating temp it stops doing this. Any ideas?

Got any codes showing? My 97 5.9 had similar symptoms and it turned out to be the TPS.

I believe the code pertaining to the transmission are because of a loose solenoid block pigtail plug on top of the tranny. Retaining tabs are broke on the plug.

Replaced plugs, wires and the shift solenoid wiring harness plug on top of the transmission. After clearing the codes. CEL stayed off, but original problem persists.

Mechanic did compression test on all cylinders. #5 was lower than all others. Could this be a cause?

How much lower? You should have no more than 10% difference between cylinders.

90psi might be a little low, min. spec is 100psi. However, i've seen 5.2 magnums running with all cylinders between 90 and 100, without any problems, but they were all pretty close together.

Compression on the 5.9s can go as high as 140 on a rebuild, that i've seen. I wouldn't worry too much about the low cylinder as long at it's not too far from the others.

So, does the problem I described make any sense then? What could cause it?

OBD II P0753 : Shift Solenoid A Electrical
OBD II P0743 : Torque Converter Clutch Electrical
OBD II P0138 : O2 Oxygen Sensor Circuit High Voltage (Bank1, Sensor2)
OBD II P0305 : Misfire Detected in #5 Cylinder

I would do a leak down check on #5 Cylinder, along with checking for spark/fuel delivery on that cylinder as well. Bad compression on that cylinder is causing misfire code, un-burnt fuel tripping O2, and bucking causing TC/Tranny codes more than likely.

It picked up on the misfire, so its down to #5, you can check yourself. View chart below for identification.
