Mopar or Shell Rotella oil for a 2022 Cummins?

I notice two great advantages with synthetic oil. First is start up in cold weather is easier on the engine. Second I am retired and don't drive that much so synthetic oil lasts longer and does not break down like dino oil.

Yes, they make diesel engine oil in both synthetic and dino. It sorta hard to find diesel engine oil in 5W-40(or 10W-30) that's not a synthetic.
Diesel engine oil has additives to suspended the soot on the oil. Don't think because the oil is black that it needs to be changed or you'll be changing it every week.

IMHO be sure to use synthetic oil in your 6.7, be it Rotella, Amsoil you can buy both Dino oil & dino blended in 10w30, many owners I know use Rotella T-6 5w40 some use 10w30 but T6 in 10w30 can be hard to find in many places and yes you can use 5w40 year round under warranty

I have used full syn in my vehicles and harleys for years but when oil shopping for my new dsl truck, I see many that say they are full synthetic but arent marked "Diesel"..I have seen quite a few that are a blend. glad to know to look for the Diesel

To see if the oil you want to use is rated for diesel usage is to look an see if its CK-4 rated this is the current diesel oil standard, sometimes you can find oil that is rated for both gas and diesel like Mobil One 5w40 is API rated CK-4 and SN/SM for gas engines, at one time Rotella T6 was API rated SN for gas engines not sure if it still is...

Only if it has the API rating of CK-4, if not then No it can not be used...

FYI you can use 5w40 year round even in DFW, I used 5w40 for over 10 years in my 2006 5.9 CTD ( I use it 5w40 in my current 2022) it holds up well even in the heat and humidity of summers in the Midwest..

I just did my first oil change at 2362 miles. I used Rotella T6 5w-40. I asked the dealer lol what weight oil I should use and he said 5-40. The main reason I changed it early was because no one could tell me what was in it. Weight or brand. I also changed it because I have an extended trip planned later this month (towing) and didn’t want to have to change it while traveling.

I am trying Triax Fleet Supreme. Check them out online. They have the CK-4 rating & a grocery list of other specs. They get great ratings & sound like they have been around for awhile supplying the military & larger fleets, but are now selling to the public. I am going to take a sample from my next oil change to see how it "really" performs. I can tell that the engine is quieter with this oil but I can't say for sure if I am getting better mileage from it or not, because I also installed a Banks system about the same time. I have gained 1-1.5 mpg but again I can't say for sure what it is from.

I can't remember if I responded to you via pm or not. I bought the Banks CAI, intake horn, & boost tubes. It does get up & move better & I gained my mpg back that I lost installing bigger tires. Is it worth all the money I paid for it? Probably not, but their stuff is of high quality. Additional bonus is I don' have to worry about the grid heater clogging up or the bolt falling off into cylinder #6.

DO NOT use Rotella T4 in your Cummins! Cummins changed from solid valve lifters to hydraulic and using T4 15-40 will cause engine clatter with hydraulic lifters. I have the solid lifters in my 2011 and have used both T4 and T6, and the oil stays cleaner/clearer than my gas powered car's oil. I would recommend Rotella T6 5-40 for your new Cummins.

Apparently the dealership is using synthetic oil for my Cummins. I pay for the oil change service in the maintenance agreement for the lifetime of the truck. No mess here, plus I get the tires rotated with the service. Changing out the fuel filters is a bit messy though... Which I decided to do myself rather than pay the dealership. Dealership wants roughly $400.00 to replace the filters. I did read today that the differential fluid should be changed every other oil change. Is this fact??

What does your owners manual state as for time or miles? My 22 owners manual states, " If using your vehicle for police, taxi, fleet, off-road or frequent trailer towing change the axle fluid at 22500 or 18 months." I think its sad that it does not say when to change it out if your not towing frequently...

My dealership refuses to do an oil change, unless you use their oil.
The jugs that i took there were purchased at Walmart & it was Rotella that is made for the Eco-diesel.
The woman in charge actually told me that she does not know what it is the sealed jugs ???

True, but the synthetic has oil is better, no matter what. What if ya can’t let it idle for a bit? I believe that if your running a turbo, you run synthetic, no exceptions.

You can believe that, but you'd be wrong....

Turbos have been around for decades as has the Cummins. In all my years as a service writer for a dealership that did Cummins work I have literally never seen one instance of a turbo failure from running dino oil over synthetic in ANY diesel truck with a turbo from the old T444E (7.3 Powerstrokes) up to the big Cummins ISX engines. Many with over a million miles with maybe one turbo replacement in that period. It would have to be an extreme case, and in that event the oil isn't the likely culprit for a failure.

I've been running plain old Shell Rotella T4 in my Cummins engines for as long as I can remember. It's all that we used in every engine. I've never had one hiccup with it. Synthetic probably won't harm anything as long as it's still changed within the proper service intervals and you use the right filters. If Cummins says synthetic required in the 19+ then run it. Otherwise, plain old dino oil does the job very well and you won't see any noticeable benefit to switching to synthetic other than a lighter wallet.
