Would someone be so kindly as to fill me in on what these are and what their function is ..? I popped off the interior back panel ( behind the back seats /below the back glass) and was surprised to find that I could literally stick my finger thru the vents and Right into the space between the cab and bed. Thanks in advance

If they weren't there to relieve pressure you'd have to really slam the doors to get them closed.

As stated above - they are also for ventilation. They are in an area of low pressure when the car is moving, and so extract air, thus giving a constant through-flow.

They’re for the squirrels so they have someplace warm to go when its cold outside.

All vehicles have some sort of pressure equalization ventilators or else when the inside cabin pressure exceeded the outside through thermal convection of the glass and metal parts the weakest link would give.

A potential entry point for water. Not knowing for sure if that was the location where I was getting water under my rear seat after heavier rains, I replaced the vents with a newer improved version and it appears to have helped.
