I know there are a few threads about this and I understand that the 4.56 gears are only made for the 2009-2010 (or 11's) but I know that they won't fit the carrier on the new axle's of the 2012's. I want to get them fabricated to fit which comes to my question:

Will I need to modify the actual gear or the carrier? I want to talk to a shop about prices but I just wanted to make sure I had all the info first before I call.

This is going to be an expensive swap for you being a 2012. On the rear, the carrier will need to be modified to accept aftermarket 4.56 gears. That is actually the easy part.

For the front, you are going to need to replace your entire front end with that of an 09-11. The ring gear on the 12's is welded to the carrier, so there is no physical way to replace just the gears. This is why there are so few guys with 12's that have made the swap.

God question. I thought the rear was the same for the 2011,'s and 2012's

haha...That is how most others feel as well. It is a great gain, but the cost and hassle just make it hard to justify.

Yes...that is why the entire front end needs to be replaced with one from an 09-11. Your best bet is to go to the junkyard and see if they will work out a deal with you to swap yours out. You might be able to get enough back from yours to offset the cost of the 09-11 unit.

On the 09-11 front end, any aftermarket gears and install kits will work without modification.

I only know 2 guys that have done this, so I'm not sure how much you can get for it. If the junkyard has one from an 09-11, they might be able to work out something close to an even trade for you.
