Hey guys.

Not a Ram owner (yet), but I am in the market for a truck. Driving a 2005 Canyon right now, serves me well and all only we got a Travel Traller a few weeks ago and the old Canyon is not pulling the way I need it too. So here I am.

I've been looking at all kinds of trucks, Ram, Silverado, F-150 in the used market to fit in my budget but I just stomble on a left over 2014 Ram Big Horn 5.7 Crew Cab with 3.21 gears at an insanely low price and wondering if i should go for it.

Travel traller is 25 ft long (28ft 10in with hitch) and weights is 5000 pounds dry. Now what do you guys think, get the new left over or get a used 2012-2013 with 3.92 for almost the same price??

New left over in my opinion. Is it the 8 speed or 6 speed. I'd guess the 8 as I don't think the 3.21 was offered with the 6. With the lower transmission ratios of the 8 speed, the first gear on the 3.21 equipped 8 speed is actually lower than the 6 speed with 3.92. Get the new truck if you like it.

yes the 2014 as the 8 speed trans. Would i be good to tow my trailler on the weekends... say 200km trips on some mix of flat to somewhat hilly roads?

Plenty good. I had a '13 Ram with a trailer about the same size and it had tons of pulling power. Payload is what got me. Mine had 3.92s but all reports I have read about the 3.21s in your weight range have been very favourable. Mine was 26' 5000 dry. The 8 speed is the game changer.

If I ever was to upgrade the Trailler, would I still have some room to grow?

It's all personal prefrance- I say 7k and under 1/2 ton will work/7k- 12k 3/4 ton gas will work and anything over 12k is 3/4-1ton diesel. But that is solely my opinion.

You won't have a lot of room to grow.

I suggest a weight distribution hitch with anti-sway and some air bags. Also, get a truck with the OEM brake controller or be prepared to add one as you will need it.

You need to know some numbers when towing:

Your truck's rated GCVWR

The trailer's dry weight

The trailer's gross combined weight (GCW) where you add the trailer dry weight to the cargo you will be adding to it.

Truck empty weight

Fuel capacity/fuel weight per gallon

Passenger weight

Gear weight in the truck

Hitch weight.

I have a spreadsheet that will help you with figuring all that out. Just PM me your email address.

I have a 2015 Express QC with 5.7 Hemi and 3.21 rear. Towing a 25' Sunline (4700 lbs. dry). Took the combo on a 4000 mile trip to South Dakota this summer. No problems at all. Factory brake controller is a must, as is weight distribution with anti sway. I recommend Reese Straightline system, also known as dual cam. A little pricey, but worth every penny! Get the new truck!
