I have a 96 dodge ram 1500 4x2 (ewww) anyway I bought a used transmission from a 2001 dodge ram 1500 4x2. 46RE

the problem i have run into is that the output shaft speed sensor is different. will the housing from the 01 transmission work on the 96? arent they the same transmissions? if so why are the speed sensors different? PLEASE HELP lol i need my truck. :(

96 is the 46RH transmission, not the 46RE transmisision IIRC. 46RH has subtle differences as well IIRC.

Update: Turns out my 96 4x2 wiring harness has two different plugs for either transmission....that's strange.

The transmissions for a 2000/1 are different from those of 99 and older. A 96 would need a 96/97 transmission IIRC.

You will have to change all the wiring in the tranny over to the 96 tranny wiring yes it will work.

96 was an odd year I have the 46re and some came with the 46rh, depends on the production date of the truck.
