New tailgate to compete with GMC. Truth be known Ram had a patent on this tailgate back in 2014, too bad GMC stole the thunder.

We have been talking a lot about the upcoming Ram multi-function tailgate in recent months. Well, it looks like Ram has just confirmed they will be showing off their new tailgate design at the Chicago Auto Show on February 7th. But the way they did it was very creative.

If this is a repost I apologize

I hope this is installable on all 5th gen trucks as it would suck to keep out early adopters.

I figured they just decided against making it when I didn't see it on the 2019's

I think it's hokey. GMC should have spent the R&D time and money on the interior. I had the tailgate step in a couple F150's and never used it. I could still hop up in the bed faster than messing with the stupid step. Easier to not use the step even with my getting close to 70 y.o. body.

I wouldn't use it either, but it's nice for those that would want it. And the interior of the RAM won't change so it's a win win for RAM consumers.

I agree it'll be good for those who want it, but for me it would be a major downside if it was "standard" on my truck. I drive tons of dirt roads and I can say with about 99% certainty that a split tailgate would bang around compared to a solid one. That's why I refuse to ever own a split cab truck with those small suicide doors to access the "backseat". The work ones I've driven would pound and jostle so badly on dirt roads, hell once or twice they unlatched and opened the whole door.

I also haul alot ON the tailgate (snowmobiles, ATV's, long lumber, etc) with oversized stuff that doesn't fit in the box with the gate up. No thanks!

After passing quick judgement on the 5th Gens when we got a sneak peak and then I actually liked them I'll wait on this tailgate.

Give Ram a chance to show me what this thing is and then I'll decide if I think it's worth it.

Certainly not a feature that I have any interest in, however I think it is better than the GMC gate. There will be a recall on the GMC gates and a re design, it's already been confirmed that if you drop the gate from flat to vertical on the GMC with a hitch in your receiver, that the folding portion of the gate makes contact with the hitch. Not sure how they didn't catch that in the design phase LOL

That Chibby commercial where everybody’s carrying their tailgates is about the dumbest commercial I’ve ever seen.

Thoughts:

1. The split tailgate could be useful if there was a bed step under the bumper; leave one half up and use it to grab onto like a railing as you step up into the bed. Also a way to let a few 12/16' 2x4s to hang long while holding the rest of the loose stuff in.

2. Things like this usually end up breaking or rattling. It just adds more possible points of failure into the tailgate.

3. If they want to make a *really* useful tailgate design, forget about all this fancy crap and add a pull-out ramp that reaches to the ground. Then you can walk right up into the bed and use the ramp for a 4 wheeler, bike or riding mower plus wheelbarrow junk straight into the bed. Someone comes up with that design they'll have a real hit.

I like the Chevy's bumper corner steps a lot more than a funky tailgate, and they've had those for a while...

GM took it a step further with the new 2020 HD, they added a bed step, now that’s something useful. Rest of the truck is weird but I like that bed step

I saw that split gate concept when it first came out and it did not impress me whatsoever. But when I saw the gmc multifunction gate I just about did a backflip. Hopefully ram took the hint, scrapped the split design and completely revamped their idea with a heavy gmc influence

Yesterday ran unveiled their multifunctional tailgate. I’m wondering if it will fit on a 2015 ram 1500 487f25148d4dcb83c13631ae382e65b1.jpgExpress.

Personally, I don't see $995 of utility and certainly don't care for the aesthetics of the asymmetrical split.

You don’t just forget something that dumb. Especially when they played it over and over every commercial break.
