Well the other day I recieved a check engine light. Took it to the local auto parts store and it was a cylinder #5 misfire and the guy says well there goes your day. I drop the truck off at the dealer and they said they will give me a call that afternoon to let me know what they find... at noon the next day still no call so i call them. The service guy tells me well they found metal in the engine and that they are going to be replacing the engine however they are on backorder. I defintely wasnt expecting to hear that. The truck is a 2015 with 83,000 miles and 17,000 miles of warranty to go. Figured they would just patch it. Now the next thought that comes to mind is i still have about 2 years to go until the truck is paid off and i planned on keeping it after paying it off for a while but now im debating on whether to trade the truck in at the dealership or keep it and hope for the best. Any input is appreciated.

If u still love the truck I’d keep it
If you are in the market or have an eye on a newer better suited truck then trade it in.

I think you should sell it at low blue book value and go get another one.

Let me know when I can come pick it up.

Your getting a new engine and if you have the 8 speed, you have one of the best trans Ram has ever used so unless the rest of the truck is falling apart around you IMHO keep it and be grateful everyday!!!!!!

I have to wonder why someone's reaction to finding out they're getting a new motor under warranty is they want to get rid of it.
Unless there are a bunch of problems with the rest of the truck, you know the history of the vehicle. Besides what is the odds you'll get two bad motors?

I dont know just wasnt expecting a new engine lol. I figured theyd patch it so i already had the mindset to trade it in. Just wanted some reassurance that keeping it would be the right choice. Appreciate the input.

I don't know what brand and weight oil you were using in the old engine but now sounds like a good time for a change!

What oil and filter combo were you running on the old engine?

I have free oil changes for life through the dealer. Im not 100% sure but id assume its whatever is factory recommended... may have to go with something better.

Every lifter failure I can think of was on synthetic oil; you’re the first I know of that had a failure on either conventional or synthetic blend. We’re seeing lifter failures across the board and over multiple viscosities.
What’s interesting is yours failed at 83k, that’s in the lifter failure window. Seeing most between 60k-100k, with a few around 120k. Not sure where we go from here collectively.
I’m just happy your getting a new motor!

From my stance I can fully understand why someone would question parting ways with their truck when they had a lifter failure at 83k miles. It's great that Ram is standing behind it and replacing the engine, but now here he sits waiting for a backordered engine to arrive. Multiple people telling him he is one of the lucky ones to get his engine replaced and internal instinct wondering when the luck will run out and the next major item will hit his pocket.

So I fully get it... I would probably be questioning the same as you. Basically start over, extend your payments a few years, but also extend your warranty and peace of mind.

With all that said I have to say that my Ram has been far the best truck I have owned. At least up to this point (09 with 118k). Being a GM fan for many years it has been a positive change. My RAM just popped some rust on the Inner Wheel well and I'm now trying to decide how I want to move forward. Let it go and drive it, or fix it and continually chase my tail fixing the next spot that appears.

Metal ?? What metal ?? That means they took it apart, yes?? Sounds kind of bogus, all of it.
