Every lifter failure I can think of was on synthetic oil; you’re the first I know of that had a failure on either conventional or synthetic blend. We’re seeing lifter failures across the board and over multiple viscosities.
What’s interesting is yours failed at 83k, that’s in the lifter failure window. Seeing most between 60k-100k, with a few around 120k. Not sure where we go from here collectively.
I’m just happy your getting a new motor!

is that really true? im no mechanic and everything i know was learned from this forum. from what i have learned is that most failures were from people running dealer oil (conventional 5w20). and many on here tell them to switch to redline, or pup 5w30. have the tick (which isnt it a sign of potential future problems with cam/lifters?) then switch to redline or pup. maybe im confused? noy questioning you or your knowledge. i have learned that you know your stuff. this just seems opposite of what the consensus is. im not a brand fan boy or anything like that. i just like to learn the truth and why stuff does what it does.

5W20 oil is just too thin at operating temps. Point blank. It is only recommended by FCA because it probably got 1mpg better with the EPA. Doesn't matter is conventional, or synthetic. However synthetics seem to have more additives to prolong.

The reason people switch to redline 5W30 Is to subdue the "hemi tick". This is the noise the cam/lifters make when wearing. Redline has high ZDDP or whatever it is. This does a better job at lubing the cam, and lifters to prolong the inevitable lol.

Not to be confused with the tick you get from your broken manifold bolts. (Seperate issue).

I'm at 150k miles on my 2012. And I am feeling the effects of a worn cam. I get slight hesitation on full/part throttle, which I presume is the intake valves not opening fully due to the worn cam.. but whatever, I'll keep her truckin until she gives up

I went through this last November with my 2012 with 71,000 miles. Took it to a dealer and they said I qualified for a new engine. It took 30 days to get it inspected by the regional guy and then like you said they don't have engines sitting on the shelf. Finally got the new long block on Feb 11th. Had to buy new spark plugs as they don't come with the long block. But I now have a new engine. The only cost to me was the plugs. We are a two car family so I didn't have to rent although the dealer did give me a loaner free for the first 30 days.

All this was because I had a 6 year 100K warranty that transferred from the original owner.

I agree with you 100% and that is all that i have learned and made to believe. @HammerHead (in how i interpreted his comment) was that all the failures were with synthetic oil, not conventional. I was surprised to hear that and it was not what i believed was the case. I think the problem is that all these motors came with 20 weight. We can see the hesitation many have that have an existing warranty to switch to 30 weight. So if infact there are a lot of cases where 20 weight synthetic is still producing worn cams, to me, it shows that 20 weight is not enough. And that is the culprit.

Its kind of like a two edged sword. If the cam/lifters went, an upgrade to a Jay Green cam would be one hell of an upgrade (a cammed 5.7 sounds oh so good). On the other hand, im not ready to put another $5000 or so into it for it right now.

Well the other day I recieved a check engine light. Took it to the local auto parts store and it was a cylinder #5 misfire and the guy says well there goes your day. I drop the truck off at the dealer and they said they will give me a call that afternoon to let me know what they find... at noon the next day still no call so i call them. The service guy tells me well they found metal in the engine and that they are going to be replacing the engine however they are on backorder. I defintely wasnt expecting to hear that. The truck is a 2015 with 83,000 miles and 17,000 miles of warranty to go. Figured they would just patch it. Now the next thought that comes to mind is i still have about 2 years to go until the truck is paid off and i planned on keeping it after paying it off for a while but now im debating on whether to trade the truck in at the dealership or keep it and hope for the best. Any input is appreciated.

Had the number three cylinder cam lobe worn off on my 2011 Sport. The five year warranty had expired but it was under the 100,000 miles, so I called the 8oo number for customer relations and they agreed to replace the cam and anything related to the drivetrain in repairing it if I would pay 10% of the cost. I have put about 20,000 miles on the engine since then and haven't had any problems. I did change the oil pan drain plug and put one in that gas a magnet on the end to catch any metal shavings that might have still been in the system. Of course, if they would have given me the option of a new engine, I would have been all over that.

Definitely keep it. Truly owning it will make you love it all the more. "Back order"? Squeaky wheel gets the grease.

The "back order" in the parts screen is likely due to no availability at a parts distribution center. Like most manufacturers it is probably an expensive item they don't inventory in the field since very few are actually used (monthly, yearly). This is an item they will pull directly from the engine manufacturing site.

Best regards,
Dusty

I don't know what they're going to do but they better figure out something because my warranty doesn't expire until 2100. Of course I run Redline so I doubt its going to be a problem.

When you get your truck back the first thing I would do is check over the work.

Dealer techs work by the job (not hourly) so they tend to work as fast as they can and "forget" the little things like putting all the bolts back and clipping wire harnesses back into place. There are good ones out there but they are drowning in a sea of techs that don't care too much. Hopefully you get one that cares about their work.

Then you were smart and I bet you paid a hell of a lot less for yours too. I literally waited until the last day(week) and then they kept trying to stick me with a $200 deductible which literally took until 11/30 to get straightened out.

In mid-2015 the price jumped to $2800 but I found a dealer online who did not update their price. Zeigler had it for $2300. I have not had to use it yet though.

I actually bought it before I had the truck. When I special ordered it I got the VIN from the sales guy but he wasn't 100% sure it was correct. A little scary spending that much on a potentially wrong vehicle. Dude helped me out a lot and he got me some hidden rebates such as $2k back for owning a Dakota. I sent him a $100 Amazon gift card for all his assistance. Of course he left the dealer and can't help me with loaner vehicles now.
