New member needs help with speakers

I have searched the forums and have found no answers. All of a sudden my front speakers stopped working. The rear speakers still work. I intend to replace the factory radio, but unsure if the speakers will start working. Can anyone answer the question of what is the problem?

Pull door panel, grab a known working speaker, hook it up to the front doors, see if it works. if not, assume channels are out on radio.

I saw on you tube that if one speaker is out, it will kill the other speaker. Does it actually happen.
