Mine was completely broke off. The tech who fixed it said they see it all the time.

Take it to dealership and insist on having them keep it overnight to diagnose cold in am, it could be manifold bolt or any combination of engine parts, just keep politely insisting on dealership keep diagnosing it.

Oh I'm definitely bringing it to the dealer. I just don't have time before my trip next weekend. Even if they say it's "normal" at least it will be documented if something does happen.

I made an appointment with the dealer. They can't look at it until Sept 3rd. Gotta love it.

I'm bringing it to my mechanic I've been going to for years to sit overnight and he's going to listen to it in the morning. Hopefully he'll have good news...

Got my truck back this afternoon. Long story short, he thinks its slightly loose torque converter bolts.

He put a stethoscope all over the block and didn't hear any rod bearing/wrist pin noise. He also said piston slap is usually a lot louder. He heard the noise in my video near the bell housing, especially when in gear.

Then he asked if anyone had worked on the trans. The dealer had the trans out back on November replacing a leaking pump seal. It's very possible they were supposed to use new bolts on the torque converter/flex plate and didn't.

So it looks like I'm good for my trip on Friday.

I have the appt next Thursday with the dealer so hopefully they wont just say "it's normal".

I'm thinking that's not it but who knows....mind clatters identically as well as tons of videos all over and my trans has never been worked on, so seems unlikely, by again who knows...again I'm not that concerned at this point with it seeming to be common, and lots of warranty left but when I have to take it in for something that definitely needs repair, I'll mention it probably so it's at least on file and see what they say but I don't feel the need to lose my truck for the clatter a lone

Just listened to the video again...it is kinda hard to tell the distinct sound from the video...good luck with the fix. Let us know the outcome.

Yeah I was thinking that was kind of an out there possibility when he told me that but he said hes seen a lot of mysterious noises coming from the flex plate/torque converter in all kinds of vehicles.

The other problem is I don't really know for sure when this started. What I do know for sure is it wasn't doing this last summer/early fall. November is when they did the trans repair which was about 4000 miles ago.

At this point I'm just glad to hear he didn't think it was anything internal.

So as I expected, they didn't hear anything "abnormal". At least it's documented. Plus they did the seat belt recall so I guess it was a worthwhile appt.

I might take a look at the torque converter bolts myself. If you search for "loose torque converter bolts" on YouTube, it sounds very similar to my noise.

Yeah I left it there overnight. They started it in the morning and didn't hear anything. They let cool down again til 2 and started again. Still didn't hear anything. Then they did the recall.

I guess that's an A for effort...

So I made them keep it another night because I wasn't happy with "that's normal". Just picked it up and they had 2 different techs listen to it this morning as well as the service manager. They all agreed that it's "normal noise when things are cold". I asked them to start up a truck on the lot but the SM said "oh you can't compare a brand new truck to a 2 year old truck."

I guess at this point it's documented at the very least. I might try the other dealer near me that's 75 miles away and see what they say.
