Hi all,
just picked up a 2018 2500 Cummins. Bought this for towing my 6K travel trailer. Not huge for the trucks abilities, understood. Watching alot of vids on u-tube about the trans. I do know tans heat and diff heat is a serious issue when towing. Looking to keep this truck long time for my TT towing. is it money well spent to get the deep sump pan and bigger diff cover for more capacity? Anyone done it, anyone not and had good results? Don't want to drop extra $1k for parts if I really dont need it, but, keeping things cooler sooner might be better.

You've already got a good trans cooler on your truck, as did mine, and all you really need is to add some fluid capacity. I went with a Mag HyTec pan. My trans stayed nice and cool. I did decide to decrease the service interval as well.

I have the same general truck and mostly haul a 7K enclosed trailer with it. I live in the mid-south and haul through the Ozark Mts in some pretty warm weather. I watch the tranny temp, but it's always right in the middle. I'd suggest you do the same, watch the temp on the first few hauls and see if it runs hot. If not, I would not mess with new parts to fix a problem you don't have.

Do your regular maintenance and leave it alone. You are WAY over thinking it and trying to fix a problem that doesn't exist. What you are towing is a drop in the bucket compared to it's capabilities.

Agree with the others that say the truck is designed to handle those loads as long as it's maintained properly.

Also know that if you change a part from OEM and that unit fails, you are open to FCA not honoring the warranty on it.

Not needed.

I have the 6.4 & have over 25k towing a 33' TT that is about 9k loaded.

Trans temps run at 168-170 in just about all conditions/loaded and unloaded, towing and not towing.

Have you towed with it yet? If so, what were your temps? I pull 9000 pounds with mine, and the trans stays right at 170°
I'm in the hot and humid SE

Same with my 16 2500 cclb 6.4 my fifthwheel is around 10k and the trans temp is always 170 or just below. When i drive to work same thing.

Only thing I would be inclined to do is put a transmission thermostat bypass in. Mishimoto or equivalent. Stock one is prone to failure, they say. I did the swap, not hard.

hello all,
thanks for the input and calming down. Yes i know the truck has more capabilities than my little TT. Just thinking about previous truck i had. No i have no issues now. It climbed up and over a 2500ft pass recently. plenty of power to get up, and braking on the back side. Not sure about the temps. I will be heading out Oct 1-3 for a trip over a pretty big hill, i think its a 5400ft pass over to Bend. i will check the temps then and see what i get.

yes what about this trans temp thermostat that is inline? Alot online talk about it failing and roasting up the trans. about 1/4 of the vids i watched people were replacing that block with the bypass.

Upgrade the accumulator plate. Cheap to do. Cost my brother a $6,300 transmission repair at 57,000 miles. Warranty over based on years. Dealer said. “We see this a lot”.

yes i have seen on the many vids I have watched, seems to be a common upgrade, that and accumulators themselves. Alot of talk about the valve body warping also.

That truck is meant to work 100% of the time. Towing 6000 lbs is about 1/3 of its capacity, and I doubt you'll be towing all the time. Your transmission is well designed and you would just be throwing away perfectly good money for no reason. Invest that money into fuel and change your trans fluid at 60k miles if you are worried.

I know that grade, made many a runs to Riverside from Vegas when I was young. That's a long uphill climb.

The trans thermo bypass is cheap insurance against a known, failure prone part. May never need it, who knows, but we blow money on lots of other”not necessarily needed” as well. I chose to do it on the 2500, haven’t done it with the 3500 yet, but will. If that stat fails it basically acts as a short bypass loop to the trans and gets hot very quickly. I have the gauges Pulled up in the center stack whenever towing. 170-172 is highest I’ve seen so far
