My brand new RAM 3500 Cummins gets to go in for a new rear main seal and rear camshaft seal. Leaked oil at 30 miles on the odometer. Its a 4x4 so I get to have the drive shafts, transfer case, transmission, flex-plate, starter, and who knows what else removed and put back together. Wonder if it will be like new when they finished? Very disappointing to have this done to my new truck.

So. They going to pull the transmission to do the sseal or the engine? I'd think the latter to do it properly. No drive train removal.

Removal of the tranny and components is just nuts & bolts. Removal of the engine is grille, radiator, electrical, hoses, modules, all the crap that's attached to the motor, including the tranny. I hope they don't do that.

sorry to hear about this. the problem is when they are producing how many thousands of these trucks a year you will see parts that are bad from the start. would i be mad.. probably but there is nothing to worry about.

had the rear main seal blow completely out on my 2010 ram 2500 6.7l with about 3000km on it. In the middle of nowhere. In February. It was -45. I was not happy. Dealer did a great job fixing it though, even steam cleaned the whole underside of the truck when they were done!

The easiest way to do a rear main is by pulling the trans, I've got it down to a 4 hour job if I can rent a lift. Everything drops out really easy so I wouldn't worry too much about them disconnecting everything, it's not like they're rebuilding the trans.

Well thanks everyone for the encouragement. BUT, I got the truck back after 3 days and they replaced the rear crankshaft seal. I drove it 45 miles from the dealership to home and crawled under to see if it was leaking. YUP!! It was worse after the repair. I had oil all over the underbelly of the transmission, cross-members, etc. oil dripping on the floor from between the tranny & engine. Called the dealership and made an appointment to take it back for repair. Took it in last Tuesday and its now Friday night and they say it is now a rear cam ring seal and that the truck might be ready by Monday afternoon. One week to replace a seal - ya, they are really working on it. Their excuse is that it is under warranty (3500 miles) and only certain people can work on it. Yup, I know what that means - the newbies that are learning their craft on a salary doing warranty work. All might be forgiven if they actually fix it this time.

May the mechanic gods be on your side and free from the affects of alcohol.

Getting work done is really a crap shoot depending on your dealership. You never know though. They might get it right the first time.

I've seen this happened with my own two at my job. When some young ******* came in to fix one of our CNC machines.

So on Monday (the 7th day) I decided to give them the "ultimatum" -- you know, "fix it or else..." I left a voice mail with the service writer that I wanted a guarantee the truck would be ready by the end of the day or I wanted the name of the General Manager. The Service Manager called back within a half hour and was all apologetic. He said it was on the rack and they were working on it. Huh, it was on the rack on Thursday -- guess they have lots of extra, unused racks!! I asked why it was day 7 and the 6 hour job wasn't finished - especially since I had an appointment. He said "I had no idea your truck was here for 7 days." Before nearly passing out from the stupidity of the comment he added that it was the shop foreman's fault for not letting him know they were overloaded with work and now that he is aware of the problem he is putting two people on it, but can't guarantee it will be done before the end of the day, also, that it is "shop policy" to give priority to jobs that were returns for failure to fix. At this point I can hardly contain myself. First, I MADE an appointment; second, they called the day before to remind me that I needed to be there by 8am for my appointment -- so there is no excuse of being "overloaded"; third, the service manage only knows what is going on if someone tells him (actually in my working life I knew some managers like that) but really, how pathetic is that; forth, so if it is shop policy (which I assume everyone would know it) why did my truck sit until day 7, why did the service writer say that only one person worked on warranty jobs like mine, etc. etc. Anyway, while I wanted someone's head on a chopping block, I decided that it was in my best interest to get the truck fixed so I, ever so politely, said thank you for taking an interest in fixing my truck that you have had for a week - that got me another insincere apology. I got the truck back by the end of that day! I have now driven it for a week and pulled a trailer over the sierra's and back and there is no leak!! Hooray.

Oops, perhaps my exuberance overflows, but it is nice to think this is now behind me.

Thanks to everyone who contributed words of encouragement.

Glad the got it correct this time but did they actually test drive it the 1st time before giving it back to you? I would let Ram know about this incompetence when you fill out the service satisfaction survey that they are gonna send you about this incident.

I think if your brand new vehicle has less than say, 500 miles on it, no obvious signs of abuse, and a major F-up like this occurs...

They should have to buy it back or give you a brand new equivalent vehicle, then be forced to sell the old one as "refurbished" at a hefty discount.
Maybe then they would pay a little more attention to QC on the assembly line.
