I have a 2001 2500 5.9gas. For about a year the truck would sometimes start in park always start in neutral. I put a new tranny in last year that's working great no problems at all. I did switch the neutral safety switch from my old tranny when I installed it a year ago. A few weeks ago it got worse to only starting in neutral. I just did a lift and swapped out a rusty fender so I figured while I was in there I would see if I can fix this problem.i started by adjusting the linkage. Each gear shows up correctly on the gear indicator on dash. And I have replaced the neutral safety switch. Still only starts in neutral. Unplugged the battery for a while still the same. Drove it around parked it. Still only starts neutral. Looked for any damaged wires nothing. Tried tightening it down a little more. Still the same. Had my wife try to start it while I pushed it by hand as hard as I could farther towards park. Nothing it just always makes the same little click as if you try to start in reverse or drive. What else could this be? I checked all fuses I have no check engine light is there some relay maybe? The switch has three wires coming out of it and I tried testing them but I don't know what they even do. With the key on one of the three was getting power. Any help would be great starting in N is getting old.
