I bought the truck used and don't think it was ever rust proofed. I knew when I bought it that the corners where bubbling. It looked ok until last week when a flake of paint fell off. I touched it and a huge chuck fell off.
I didn't rust proof it because I was going to touch up the rust in the spring. I didn't make it.
Now it is going to need some metal welded in.
I'll take some pics when I start working on it to show the extent of the damage.

im from canada as well up in edmonton. my 2011 started to rust from rock chips exposing the metal. i used hand tools to scrape off the rusted areas and then used a paint pen from the dealer to repaint and reseal. just sold the truck so ill never know for sure but in my minimal experience, rust is a recurring cancer.

You would think Alberta would see less rust than lets say Ontario, we do not use salt here.

How would one find out if truck has been rust proof when purchased new? I just picked up 2014 few months ago

what years had that issue, is it mostly 2009s? also would periodic fluid filming in rocker corners/panels help this?

Honestly Rust proofing doesn't really work. There are to many places that the rust proofing can't get into, to many holes in the frame, body etc. All it does is hide the fact it is rusting from the inside. Some people swear by it but growing up in Norther New York where they dump more salt down than what is in all the oceans, no amount of rust proofing will save your truck.

^ I use Krown on all my vehicles up north here, no rust issues for me.

I swear by the stuff, but to each their own!

Got to undercoat yearly in Canada use rust check, Krown or fluid film

Corrosion Free is another option, used by the US and Canadian military for years. Only has to be applied once every 18 months

i agree, but also there are more rocks and such in the sand they use which make tiny scuffs in the paint. the rust still there, just somewhat more isolated than salt rust.

i got mine done through the dealer as a throw in to get me to sign on the dotted line. they actually only sprayed the structural steel components/body frame which i think is something different then the Krown application. i plan on getting mine done right around halloween every year so its ready for the winter.

also huge thing to keep your truck clean when it is getting dirty in the winter. will save this headache down the road
