When Pennzoil went to GTL or "Gas to Lube" formulation, the Ultra became their Ultra Platinum line. When you find any 0W-40 Ultra laying around, it is just a couple year old stock but still meets the MS-12633 spec you need. I believe even the SKU's between them are the same.

soo wait a second.

their old version of "Ultra 0W-40" is the same as the new "Ultra Platinum 0W-40" but.. the new "ultra" doesn't meet the requirements or is not even made in 0W-40?

You are getting confused.

Around 2013 when the MS-12633 spec came out to support the then 6.4 SRT motor and would also later be the same spec for the ram 6.4 motor in 2014, Pennzoil released their 0W-40 Ultra to support this.

Around late 2014 or early 2015, Pennzoil across their whole synthetic line, went to a gas to lube or "GTL" formulation and in the case of 0W-40, retained the same MS-12633 spec and changed the name from Ultra to "Ultra-Platnium".

Either one meets the same MS-12633 specification in 0W-40 and are considered "fit, form & function" interchangeable. That is why IIRC, they had the same SKU's and when found on the shelf at Autozone and from the couple of orders I placed through Pepboy's, I actually got a mixed of the older Ultra only bottles and some of the newer Ultra-Platnium bottles.

sorry for the confusion.

:happy107:

If you want to be really confused, 6.4 RAM engine was designed and durability tested with 5W-30 oil in mind. For whatever reason, the 0W-40 would make it into the manual as being what is recommended.

Here is a video discussing it by the RAM brand marketing head and RAM chief engineer. Still follow the owners manual. Just something to make you think.

this is absurd. he says you cans use conventional 5w-30..? but we are REQUIRED to adhere to our Manuel. sooooo? :artist1: when i use 5w-30 and my MDS malfunctions and needs warranty work (or anything for that matter) do i tell them that the chief engineer said i could on a youtube video?

It's controversial but the owners manual trumps all and should always be what is followed.

I have posted that video in other like discussions and some think they do not know what they are talking about but I personally believe the guy that 5W-30 was used and for whatever reason, a last minute change to the 0W-40 spec in the manual was made.

I have had oil analysis of both the factory fill and two oil changes with the Ultra 0W-40 and find it is on the lower end of the 40W scale and shears down into a thick 30W in use. So that makes me believe they did use 5W-30 and found it satisfactory.

The main thing with Pennzoil MS-12633 and even the AMSOIL offering claiming to meet MS-12633, is that these oils are higher in molybdenum when compared to standard 5W-30. So there is some technical reason for it.

In some threads showing cam failures on the 5.7 Hemi, a common theme was the use of low or no molybdenum oils like Valvoline were exclusively used before the failures. I think the high moly content of the MS-12633 0W-40 oils is to alleviate that issue with the 6.4. That is just speculation on my part though.

Once I am out of warranty, I will probably migrate to a 5W-30 synthetic oil but it will be one with a decent moly content.

sounds good to me

just a question for you. After warranty is up you want t to switch to a 5w-30 that has a higher moly content...so why not stay with the recommended oil that is basically a thick 30w and has that high moly you are looking for?

For the same reasons you have inquired about, cost and availability. I think the Ultra-Platnium 0w-40 is a great oil regardless and would continue to buy it if found on sale and relatively cheap. Just when Iam out of warranty, I am not gonna sweat it as much.

There is already a few users around here that have said "fu*k it" and are running the Mobil 0W-40 and some running synthetic 5W-40 with no problems.

I got 5 years or 100K to figure it out and will probably change my mind numerous times before then. You 2016+ guys got hosed with with 60K warranty and will be there sooner.

Just making sure there wasn't any other reason

true but i honestly didn't care to much about what the warranty was. yes its something to consider for sure, still would have bought it with even less warranty though. Just MO

I bet the engineers used 5w-30 in the testing for the same reason we are looking for alternatives to the 0w-40. They couldn't find any to use. I have gone to Amsoil with the 6 month free membership to get the discount on oil. I bought 2 cases of oil and a premium oil filter for $234 shipped to my door. It will get me 3.5 oil changes (I will have to get 2 more filters, but those are available) for less than the dealer charges. They want $90 + tax.

I have a lifetime powertrain warranty so I will be using the specified oil for a long time. It's a small price to pay for warranty coverage.
