A service manager friend of a large independent shop gave me the heads up that they were having issues ordering oil filters (out of stock). I read on another forum that oil producers are having issues with the additives package supply chain. One of the posters stated that their local Walmart was wiped out of motor oil. Just out of morbid curiosity, I went to Costco and sure enough their synthetic oil (their 2 5 quart box) was jacked up to $26.99 (usually on sale for $21.99). I know that $5 isn't a big deal to most of us but it's an interesting pricing trend. I picked up some more oil and order extra oil filters just in case. I have a stash of Rotella Gas Truck and bought some more Costco synthetic oil for my wife's MDX. Not trying to incite a riot; this is purely anecdotal. Are you guys noticing the same trend?

Here is a short article:

I haven’t noticed any shortage of oil products but I have noticed a sharp increase in prices since January for most products. I have also noticed that “sales” on oil and filters don’t seem to be as good as before either. A couple of weeks ago NAPA auto parts had their platinum filters on sale for $7.99 each of which I bought seven. They had a similar sale a couple years ago and the price was $4.99 so that’s a huge difference for only a couple of years.

I've not had any trouble finding PUP 5W-20 for the truck so far, but I just had a devil of a time finding PUP 0W-20 for my wife's Subaru.

I did oil changes on tye Ram and my wifes car last month. No issue with Pennzoil, but two auto parrs stores had limited filters. Got a wix for the wifes car, and a Mobil 1 for the truck. That was the only brand that was on the shelf that would fit.

I usually get the oil - PUP 5W-30 - and the Royal Purple oil filters from Amazon. The oil is taking a while to come in, and the filters are not available at the moment. Fortunately I'm ordering after doing the last change so I have time to wait for them to come in or find an alternate source.

My buddy owns a **** Shop and can't get PZ-167 or PZ-173 filters - which happens to be the 2 most popular filters he uses...

just went to Walmart last night and filters were picked clean and not as much oil as they usually carry. It is a big walmart and they usually have plenty. There was one Mopar 339 filter. no PUP 0-40.

I am sure glad I bought twenty RP 20-820's baby. That should last me for life and then some. No shelf life on those spun microglass, and I hit the lip with magic l u b e so it will never dry out, that is the stuff you use on swimming pool seals.

I have seen no oil shortage here but the guy at the autoparts store did tell me that WIX was having supply issues when I tried to get a filter for the Jeep.

He said it was Covid related.

A buddy of mine sells filters for another industry and he said his were in short supply because the same material in his is used in face masks.

Hopefully now we are seeing the backside of the Covid crap the various supply issues will start to work themselves out.
