How many miles on the paper filter, what oil are you using?

For many miles I took my truck to the dealer who installed
the Mopar paper filter. My oil pressure was just like yours,
but what disturbed me the most was the coal-black color of
the oil shortly after a change.

Judging by the bad feeling I was getting from my dealer after
reading through the receipts and seeing zero consistency in
the oil they were using, sometimes synthetic, sometimes no
mention, sometimes 5w-20, once they wrote 5w-30.
While I was told they used only Pennzoil synthetic, 90% of
my receipts just said "oil".

I switched to Pennzoil Ultra Platinum (PUP) 5w-20 and Royal
Purple oversize 20-820 filter, saw the same oil pressures but
the oil began to look newer longer.

Currently using Red Line 5w-30. Now that increased the oil
pressure. I have to be running it pretty hard and hot to see
pressures in the high 30's. Mostly it now runs from 40psi to
60-65 psi.
Most of all my oil is looking progressively cleaner for longer
periods with each change.

Looking back in time I can't help but wonder if those paper
filters were simply clogging up and going into bypass, leading
to the black oil. And I mean solid black at 500 miles.

I'm betting you new filter is allowing greater flow as well as
greater filtration. Might need to change something else to see
a change in pressure, but IMHO 35psi at hot idle is pretty
normal.

I doubt having a cellulose media oil filter had any bearing on your oil getting black quicker with the dealership oil changes and is more to do with most dealerships and any other oil change shop will only let the oil drain until it is barely a steady stream and then reinstall the oil pan plug leaving sizeable amount of old oil still in.

You doing your own oil changes is ensuring maximum appreciable amount of old oil to drain and giving your fresh refill the best possible ratio.

This could very well be a part of it, but I think bottom line is the
same for both of us: if we want it done right and we want to know
how it is done, we have to do it ourselves.

My dealer gave me a long list of reasons to stop putting my trust
in them, and the one you mentioned is also on the list.

Glad you asked. Had to look at the paperwork and learned some things. First off, 2000 mi on the filter and oil.

For years my shop used Mobil Super Syn 5W20.
Seems 3 oil changes ago they switched to LTE Full Syn Dexos 0W20. Anyone have thoughts on that?

I do 5k OCI and add a pint of LubeGard at every service.

Sure wish Canuck Wally Worlds carried a filter selection that good.My local Wally World is one of their super centers, but it's filter selection sucks

And, I can't find a listing for the Fram Endurance filter at Walmart.ca, so it's time for another road trip to NY State.

One of the ways we used to keep high rpm AMC's alive was to add an extra oil line under the intake manifold and drill and tap into the #5 main bearing to keep enough oil fed to the mains so they wouldn't spin a bearing.I.'m starting to wonder if a guy couldn't add something similiar to a hemi utilizing a couple tapped holes off the lifter galleys with multiple feed lines off each hole, that are drilled through the block and situated so they fed a direct stream of oil at the cam lobes and lifters. I think with a little reworking the hemi's oiling system could be taken from mediocre to acceptable

A new kit! Love it! Then make a new head with 4 valves per cylinder and we might have a modern engine, sans GDI!

I wouldn't know about Wal-marts delivery service.

The Amsoil EAO11 oil filter is an absolute match for comparison to FRAM FE Synthetic ENDURANCE oil filter.

Same amount of inlet holes, thick base plate and outer canister with screen supported with wired backing synthetic micro glass filter media ... it even has the same leaf spring plastic by-pass valve set up.

... and isn't expensive.

Amsoil cross reference oil filter to Fram FE 10575 and Royal Purple 20-500 is EO17.

It is a couple dollars more expensive than Fram FE at the preferred member price, see below.

Yep, and by the time "if" you were to become a member with Amsoil and to qualify for their premium preferred member price, imo, it still isn't a decent break.

Imo, you selected for use for your "HEMI beast" an equal alternative with the FRAM FE SYNTHETIC Endurance series oil filter, and again, imo is just as good ... especially considering the cost difference.

You make legitimate point. Most folks do not realize that once the recalls were fixed on the Pinto Sedans, the cars were great little cars to have. Heck, I owned 3 of them and got them for pennies on the dollar just because of the publics' opinion. Many folks do not know that the Pinto station wagon was never in the recall. The tank was in the driver's rear quarter, away from the danger of explosion, but that didn't stop the mania from including them as well.

So, Ford did the smart thing market wise. They rebranded the Mustang as Mustang 2 in 1974... and what platform did they use!?! You guessed it.... THE PINTO! And the hapless public bought them as if they were going out of style!

The original HEMI was a trend setting monster engine. When this new generation was brought out, there was a lot of enthusiasm. ( Does that thing have a HEMI in it?) Remember that ad?

Life and marketing are predictable. From putting a toy in a meal and calling it a "Happy Meal" to Ads which appeal to machismo, (Guts! Glory! Ram!) the basic psychology is firmly repetitive and oh so "same song, different verse!".
Having Sam Elliott do the voice overs for the RAM Brand did not hurt either, LOL.

Let me start off by saying, I grew up in a middle-class family.;)

As promised i cut open my NEW 5-7 year old RP 20-820 to get some eyeballs on it. See how they are holding up over time. Picture included so someone that is smarter than me might know what the date of manufacture was

I see the 11 22 but there’s no way is is 2022 or 2011.

Just looked. The numbers in the same place on another filter were 11 25 so there is no way that section of numbers is the date in that serial number

Unless this is the movie terminator and iv travelled time….. im mean. My name IS Kyle….
