Question:
I am getting ready for an oil change on my pentastar motor and am considering soaking the new cartridge filter in fresh oil before installing. Anybody here doing this or seen this done before? In all my past vehicles, which took canister filters, I always added at least enough oil to saturate the new filter media. Would there be any reason not to soak a cartridge filter before installing?

@HEMIMANN this shows the ruffled leaf spring on the champ made fram synthetic endurance. That carquest one should fit your truck

It's a good looking filter, thanks to WCW for cutting open. CarQuest has more filter media despite a shorter canister but 1/2 the thickness. Fram FE is more robust, who knows how they perform? I've got a pile of oil filters for a while anyway, but thanks.

No. I put them in straight out of the box. I make enough of a mess already, no point in adding to it with a soaked filter.

So just grabbed some Fram Ultra filters for my and my dad's vehicles. Went to a Canadian Tire store and grabbed 4 XG2, 2 XG10575, and 1 XG5. They said whatever is on the shelves is all they have and are getting. Checking around other CT stores in the area some have quite a few stock left, like 30 and 40.

Thanks for your replies. For reference purposes, I was able to find quite a discussion on the topic in the thread titled:

A cautionary tale.......keep up on your maintenance

Awesome, key note fram fe 1.47 mm thick versus .97mm thick in carquest. So more in the wix ilk as opposed to that thick loose media I find desirable. However, it is synthetic as of now, which makes wix XP obsolete imo, why pay wix XP dollars for a paper filter when you have carquest as an option. Once more, car quest is made as a stand alone product?

It seems for spun glass if the media is tight, it is thin, and if it is loose, it is thick. I wonder why not have thick tight media, or thin loose media? Having to chose between those options, I opt for the looser media. Is anyone aware of any filters being tested after the service interval instead of before? They should have an atsm for that, as that would be the most important info?

I tried to read through this thread, but with 177 pages I'll just ask and maybe get a response. I'm using the Mopar SRT filters (5038041AA) - not sure of the quality but I like the increased oil pressure at idle and startup.

These filters are a bit pricey, are they worth the money or should I be looking elsewhere?

Probably been asked and answered - I read through many pages and didn't find an answer.

If it is yellow, it's paper... synthetic filters are as good day 1 and day 360. Paper starts degrading the day you run oil through it until it goes stiff. And pay extra for paper filter? I know some good forum guys doing that, but I wouldn't.

After a long interval like 6 mos or 5k miles, cut it apart. The media will either be stiff or pliable, will tell you how it is handling in your application. If it is stiff, never go back.

Anyone hear anything else about this?
We all need to send them a letter, bring back 100% spun glass. So I don't know much about their brands, a niche market for sure not really on the consumer shelf, maybe eco guard. Whether they will build high end champ products like Amsoil EA or RP remains to be seen, but those companies have moved on or quit it.

Sadly, I think everything is 'build it quick and cheap' today with the business models. I do like to have hope, but there is such a low bar in every aspect of everything we buy today. Sad.

The decision makers and bean counters at the top usually know nothing about what they actually sell, just numbers and agendas. They know a vehicle goes forward with that peddle on the floor. May be worth a try to convince them a quality synthetic media filter is needed... you know, so the cars all get clean, green electric power. Paper will burn right? And the trees... synthetic trees grow back way faster. Gotta have a quality filter so you don't get brown outs driving down the road, better range too. Just make the filters to the specs we give you and the batteries can get that pure clean power to that elecrtic motor. Hero with a green cape.

They already make one with 100% synthetic media, comparable to the FE2.
