I had the dealer change the oil in my truck for the first 25K miles of being new. First 2-3 changes were dino @ 3K, then switched to synthetic w/ 5K changes. Last year I changed the oil myself as the dealer I was using is no longer in business. I used the SRT filter and PUP 5w-20, using 7qt. Previously I rarely checked the oil level as when I did it was always in the safe lines/did not move.

I checked my oil a while back and noticed the oil was at the bottom of the "safe" line, I know when I changed it, it was at the top line. I was due for an oil change anyway (5k) so I I changed the oil, again using the SRT filter, PUP 5w-20 and 7qt. The oil was at the top line, maybe a hair over, it's been 1,000 miles and the oil is down a bit on the stick.

I need to check the oil catch can level to see what's in there, it does seem like its filling up more often than in the past since I have been changing my own oil.

Truck has 34,*** miles, no noises (not even the "tick"), runs great. No towing/hauling, just the occasional romp on the gas here and there.

My previous truck (08' PowerWagon) did not like mobil one synthetic at all. It too would be at or under the safe line by the time it was due for an oil change.

Is this a common thing for the Hemi running PUP/synthetic?

My opinion is you should switch to 5w30 like the rest of us 20 is to thin. Also did you check the level after it sat/engine cold? have seen it where people will check level after car is running and oil had no time to leak back down so it will show a little low.

All vehicles use oil, some barely use it, some burn a quart every 3k miles. In fact the best vehicle I ever owned used a quart every 3k miles. Never gave me an ounce of trouble over 11 years. Still mad at the wife for talking me out of that vehicle.

Go thicker for sure, less room between the tolerances, good for you. Plus, maybe try ester oil, less burning there as well.

How much oil actually drains out?

Reason I ask is, the level reading on the stick can be all over the place the more you stab, yank, wipe and repeat.

My suggestion if your catch can is filling up quicker than normal might be time to change the PCV valve. The recommended change interval i believe is approximately 40K miles and at 34k, you could be due.

My thoughts

I had an 08 Hemi that drank oil when I bought it at ~25k, drank more at 150k. Tried a couple different brands, same story. It was worse on the highway, had a 3000 mile trip near the end of my ownership and it must've burned 4qt.

My 18 burns none, it's got 5w30 Mobil in it. Both use the same catch can.

Keep a good PCV valve in it and keep an eye on the level... About all you can do.

FWIW checked the waste oil container, 6qt. came out at the last oil change.

Catch can was currently 1/4-1/3rd full at 1K miles.

Someone probably had a bad day on assembly or ring manufacturing.
Ring gap to wide, ring gaps not orientated correctly, forgot to hone a cylinder, guides & stones worn on hone machine......etc
