call me naive, stupid, oblivious etc. I don’t care, but I can’t grasp wtf people mean when they say the 4th gend (and now the 5th gen classic) are the last trucks that have “a mini big rig look” what exactly are you referring/comparing it to in terms of asthetics??

If you look at the D150 from the eighties, you would find that GMC/Chevy, Dodge and Ford all looked similar. In the monitors, Dodge set the trend with styling by designing a larger bigger faced grill along with some other body style changes in a successful attempt at putting the big rig look on a pick up. At the time, it was a radical departure from the way trucks looked. This change may also have saved the Dodge pick up truck.

Here is a 1991 Ram pickup. Notice the elevation of the fenders in relation to the hood line. Basically, they match, creating a consistently flat side to side profile:

Dodge producted a major redesign of the Ram pickup in 1994 that many described as having the "big rig" look due to fenders located below the hood line with headlights mounted in them:

.

And that redesign put ram on the map.

Ram is losing the things that made it stand out from the pack to begin with. Gone is the raised hood height, gone is the crosshair grille. When the vehicle you make isn't clearly identifiable on the road it becomes a lot harder to sell.

If you'll notice, Mustangs since the 2005 restyle don't have Ford's trademark blue oval anywhere on them, and if you don't order the tape stripe package they don't say MUSTANG anywhere on the exterior either. Pony emblems and triple vertical tail lights are the only clues given by the manufacturer, but even those ignorant when it comes to automobiles know "Hey! That's a Mustang."

It is that crucial element of styling which is missing from most modern designs. It is also why manufacturers feel the need to put huge brand badges on the vehicles or, in our case, spell out R A M on the nose and tail gate. If the vehicle cannot be identified merely by its shape and styling cues the designers have done a poor job. This is what they mean when they say "Designed by committee."

Labeling the trucks on the tailgate I'd actually pretty retro. You can thank MR. EPA for a lot of the style changes over the years.

yeah the old chevy square bodies come to mind when i think of the brand on the tailgate. looked good on those, however the giant ass RAM badges i dont care for. but yes, i wonder how long the 5th gen body style will stick around. maybe they wont do as well as they hoped and re-invent sooner than usual.

Dodge, Chevy, GMC, Ford and jeep was always on there tailgate. Usually embossed in the metal and painted white as I recall. Maybe ram will do a mid gen refresh and bring back the ram hood ornament.

Truthfully I like the 25/3500 look the best with the hood/grille/bumper combo. I think that was their best looking design, wish the 1500 wasn’t so pinched compared to it

Well said. Another good reason why I bought my 2500. It actually looks like a truck

Great post! It is for this very reason I want no badging whatsoever. The truck’s design should tell it apart from other brands. I already bought the truck, I am done advertising a brand. We don’ need no stinkin’ Badges...

But that is just me.

Amen. Should have realized that fact 2 trucks prior to the 18 2500. The "drive feel" got my attention on delivery day.

I like sporting the engine badge. Although I have contemplated re-badging my truck in all black badges just because the ecodiesel badge looks lonely all by itself. But I wanna get the ram 1500 badges with the heavy duty badge included to give it a unique factor to it.

I'm hoping the 2019 grows on me but currently I see one and think how squinty the headlights look. It might grow on me but I'm with ya on the bland look. It doesn't seem to stand out for me. The gen 4 seems more muscular and bold... appears tougher to me. I know it's all a visual illusion but it gives an impression. I actually looked at the F150's before I got the Ram and they seemed fragile and weak. I know they aren't, but the design didn't say durable to me. F250+ superdutys = Hell Yes but not the F150. Maybe over time I'll see more of the new Ram's and like then but for now, not a fan.

Agreed. To me the 19s look like an oversized Tacoma, but that's just me. I do love the looks of My 2500. Look tall, tough and mighty.
