You should do manual calculations. First, fill tank to when it clicks off ( never try to squeeze more in, that is a bad thing in the world of good versus bad) and set trip odometer to 0. Drive to a tank level you feel comfortable with, closer to empty is better. Then fill again and divide miles driven by number of gallons. Repeat a couple times and add all results together and divide by the number of occurrences. This will give you a truer average.

As far as your number, that could be accurate if you drive in city, with a lead foot, tow a lot, idle a lot, carry a lot of gear, always drive with defrost or A/C on, etc. The uniqueness of each person's driving habits makes it hard to compare numbers, but your numbers could be indicating a problem somewhere. Get your manually calculated numbers and let us know, might be able to talk through things here. Good luck.

Towing? In town? Larger tires? Lead foot? Aside from that it seems pretty low to me. Both of my 1500's got around 13 in town and 18 highway but they were 100% stock, not towing and driving conservatively

Have you put enough miles on it to break it in yet ?

Once the odometer reaches a certain point, your MPG will increase

towing or drag racing it's normal. Otherwise it's not. Lead foot city driving also possible, but the lead foot would require a lot of lead.

If it's just you driving the truck around, then something sounds wrong ... or are you towing a 38 foot camper or boat or ?? all of the time. I get 20.8 mpg in the city with my 5.7L hemi ...

I work from home so fill mine every pay day (2 week) no matter what so thankfully it's usually no more than maybe $50-70 each fill up and sometimes only $20. But yeah, the most mine has ever taken has been 27 gallons. I just filled up today ($46) but only needed 12 gallons. 3.559/gallon. If I ran it to 'E' then it would cost me close to $100.

When my odometer was at around 300 miles, i was only getting about 18 MPG
Somewhere around 600 miles, i was almost getting 21 mpg
Then i took a cross country trip, California to Connecticut & the MPG climbed to 27

I've heard, unless your on a long distance trip, it's best to always fill up before your down 1/2 tank. Helps keep the fuel fresher. And I think w/ diesel, that would also reduce condensation/ water formation.

IF that is all you are getting after manual calculations, something is terribly wrong. Even if you did burnouts light to light, not sure you could get that low mileage. You got a lot of mods, cam swap, 37" tires, lay on throttle every time you move, towing 7,000 lbs? I average 13 to 17 mpg in town on MY 19, heck I get 10-13 towing 6,000 lbs. Something not right and/or sometime electronic wrong. (maybe your lie-o-meter broken). Just examples being outlandish but IMHO, something definitely (as my grandmother would have said) not kosher.

I generally got 27 MPG on the highway, when i first bought my eco-diesel. My eco-diesel was using 5w-20 motor oil, while i was back in Connecticut, Chrysler came out with that notice about changing over to the 15w-40 weight.

Like a trip from El Cajon Ca to Yuma Az is 153 miles
I took the very first off ramp to a place they sell #2 diesel, I would fill up & wait at the Truckers Scale House & until the contractor would show up pulling a wide load back to San Diego.
On that type of run, my mileage would read 27 mpg

Then we had to get that FIX that was mandated by the Gov't & the mileage dropped to about 21 on those quick Yuma runs.

Then the gov't sent out a notice stating Chrysler had over adjusted & the mileage climbed up to maybe 23 MPG

One of those recalls that i mentioned was this one
I don't know if this was the one that drastically dropped the fuel mileage or if it was the one that gave some of the MPG back

AEM (Approved Emissions Modification),

TFL headline about it was done after the fact :(

Did a Recall Ruin the 2016 Ram EcoDiesel?

The Ram’s mileage is led by the stout base gasoline 3.6-liter V-6 and a 3.0-liter diesel V-6 that counts Cars.com editors among its fans. The top EPA-estimated mileage comes from HFE (high fuel efficiency) versions powered by gasoline (18/25/21 mpg city/highway/combined) or diesel (21/29/24 mpg) engines. Note that the HFE treatment comes only with rear-wheel drive and at added cost. Non-HFE versions of the Ram lose 1 mpg city and highway in diesel and 1 mpg city and combined in gas versions

How the heck are you getting 20.8 mpg in town, how long is your commute in the city. I can barely get 20 cruising 60 down the hwy, and my 2020 1500 5.7 is bone stock. I have 8700 miles on it now and it should be broken in. So what are you doing that I am not? I want 20 mpg, lol.

Hi. I wish I had a secret to share. I do have a very light foot, I let ECO mode (MDS) turn on whenever it wants, I use Red Line 5W20 oil, 89 octane gas, no towing ... that's about it. I am retired, so I don't really have a "normal" or consistent commute, just to the store, the airport, wherever. I have just under 5K miles on the truck. Oh, one other thing is I keep idling time to an absolute minimum - I'm in a warm climate, so no letting the truck warm up for 15 minutes. Thanks. If I think of anything else, I'll let you know.

Yup, 125$ to fill mine, such ********, and to think not even a year ago it was less than half of that, thanx "big guy" (Joke biadhen)!!
I've yet to find a station that won't pre-auth more than $100. I don't bother re-setting the machine to do a second round.

I have tracked every tank on my 2019 since new and there is no statistical difference in the first tank and the last one a week ago.
