So, I'm wasting money if I changed it at 8k miles?

I think you have a lot of oil left at 8k. Do an oil analysis near the factory interval for peace of mind and see how wear is. That's what I did which made me confident to go further.

Just google Blackstone Laboratories; on the site request a test kit and they send it to you free. When you change your oil take a sample and send it back to them with a check for $28. In 2 weeks you will receive an email with your oil report. Hear is my last 5 Oil Analysis for reference.

The AMSoil will certainly be black by the time the computer says its time to change. I don’t see why th rules have changed on this. Dirty oil means it is time to change

If its black that just means that its doing its job and nothing more. The rules haven't necessarily changed but oils have come a long way in the last 20 years. Many of your big companies out there use an oil analysis to determine when to change the oil in their equipment. That's a hell of a lot cheaper than an 800 gal oil change in most cases.
That being said even I have never gone more than 7K miles on an oil change so I understand where you're coming from.
