Chuck the thermostat in the water while the waters cold Ed,and steal your wifes meat thermometer to monitor the water temp as it comes up to temp .I just hang the thermometer on the side of the pot so i don't have any chance of getting burned,i also use a smaller pot,one that's just deep enough to cover the t-stat with about an inch or 2 of water.

I have a 2012 - it is spec'd for a 195-deg F thermostat. However, Ram superceded the P/N and now the replacement thermostat is 203-deg F.

In my truck, watching the temp, the 203-deg F thermostat ran 208-deg F to about 213-deg F.

I bought an aftermarket 192-def F thermostat, and the truck returned to running the same temps as it did with the factory OEM 195-deg F thermostat.

Just my experiences if you're trying to figure out a seemingly 'hot' thermostat when using new OEM ones.

Yea, that's what I did most recently.

I removed the grille and coolant reservoir emptied the res and ran about 3/4 gallon and then a full gallon of distilled water into the upper hose and let it run out the lower hose.

Here's so far. 2 jugs on left ae the initial drain of the rad (I ended up losing about 1qt. on the floor...lol).

Middle jug is from the reservoir.

Right 2 jugs are the 3/4 gallon and then the full gallon of distilled water.

I did not change the fluid in the reservoir 90k ago, but there is no oily sheen or anything in it.

Gonna start installing the radiator.

Which brand thermostat did you use and how long has it been in? Any problems with it?

The stat in the pics is the OE that I got a couple years ago.

The one in the truck was the original stat, same part # 52028898AI, I did not change it when I changed coolant 90k miles ago. 196k on my truck now, had 28684 when I got it in Sept. of 2017.

Ok, so I got the e-fan and upper shroud in. Decided to use the lightest water/coolant that I ran straight through to wash out the reservoir.

Put about a half gallon in, shook it up and boy was it dirty. Ran the other half gallon through and it was less dirty. Here's the result:

Ran the other 3/4 gallon through, it was normal:
20250112_172946.jpg
Now, I did notice a little sheen on the first wash I did, and there was a small bit of mung in there, maybe 1/2 a teaspoon. The yellow drain pan is used for oil changes too and just gets wiped with an oil absorbant pad.

Any thoughts?

Good job Ed :waytogo: Are you going to add any RMI to it? Mike/Burla swears by it,and i'm running some in my 300,as i don't think it hurts anything;)

No, I am not.

I just got everything back together, will fill with distilled water and run tomorrow. Almost dark now. Should bleed easy as I cut the thermostat apart.

In looking a bit closer, my serpentine belt is shot.

Any recommendations as far as brand?

Oh, and I did break one of the clips on my grille , was not easy removing it, but I wish I had removed it first, would've made disassembly easy.

I keep a dozen of them on hand, just in case. The christmas tree fasteners and 1/4 push rivets too.

They're so cheap that it doesn't make sense to not have them on-hand.

Grill clips

Christmas tree fasteners. These fit the radiator cover, lower shroud cover, and a ton of other places in the truck.

And these things for just about everything else, like the headlight access doors on the wheel well liners. They are also perfect for attaching to a pegboard:

Do you think a fluid extractor pump would have removed the fluid from the reservoir ?
I'm to lazy to remove it .

It probably would. However I dumped mine out. The middle jug is what was in the res:
20250112_151927.jpg
I took the jug on the right, put half in the res, shook it, emptied it, then repeated with the other half.

This is the result:
20250112_172918.jpg
Gonna see if it looks any different tomorrow afternoon.

I purchased a Gates 34059S.

Been in there, along with a Cold Case radiator, for about 15k miles now...no issues.

Would rather a OEM one at 190-195F; but since those don't exist...

I was looking at that Gates 34059S on Amazon, then noticed the pic for the Motorad 416-192 on summit

The Gates:

The Motorad 416-192

The two pics even have the same dust specs, in the same places on the gasket.

Motorad reminds me of Taco Bell!

I'll still buy one.

That is disheartening.

Yea, I'm retiring in 1yr, 8mos and 1day. My plan is to keep my current truck for the rest of my life.

If that plan fails, my next car will be one like yours. I may get one anyway. I'm done buying expensive cars.

I've kinda always wanted an old 1st gen Dodge Ram. I don't want to have to move a 3rd vehicle 2600 miles next year, but after I've relocated, I going to buy one.

If I remember right, that 4.3 uses the same water pump as a small block Chevy?
I miss my 1989 D-150.
