Tire pressures in extremely cold pressure. Question:

I have a 2018 2500/Diesel. ( Firestone Transforce AT). Used mostly for towing / garaged normally. But i find myself in Ohio on an assignment.

Yeah i know everyone hates these tires. Rightly so. The Michelin’s on my 2011 were much better They are the OEM. And they do appear to suck per their reputation.

This is the first time i have gone from extreme ( for me ) cold to highway.

Recommended tire pressure is 80. And i have set them at 80 when Parked - As i normally would. But at 21 degrees they heat up at speed on the road.

Should i drop to 78 or so to allow for the exteme overnight cold compared to moderately warm garage storage?
Return trip is 600 miles at happy highway speeds is a concern.

I am a bit concerned since these tires do appear to be utter crap. Snow performance is no better than an all weather tire ( or is my pressure too high / regardless of recommended?).

BTW while driving from NYC to Ohio the RR pulled apart - tread completely separated from the sidewall at 5030 miles ( with cold pressure at 79). Filed a warranty claim with Firestone. I am sure the wil tell me to - well never mind </RANT_OFF>

should i set overnight pressures lower than recommended 80 given the ( for me) very overnight cold??

I would back em down to 60 psi if you have no weight. And yup- they suck and are slicker than ****.

Funny to hear somebody call Ohio “extreme” Lol ... I live here in NE Ohio, and we played golf on Dec 28th ... Any way ... I set my tires to 40 psi ... At 5:00 when I come out of work, and the temps are in the teens, they drop to 37 or 38 psi ... By the time I get home (20 min highway ride ) they are 42 psi ... You don’t get as big a pressure swings in cold weather as you might think ... Stick around, we’re supposed to get a foot of snow on Sat ... Time to play !!!!

Yes point taken. I am a city boy. but now its 9 degrees out and predicted to drop to -7/9 in the morning. The day before it was freezing rain and then dropped to 15. My tailgate was frozen and I had to pour hot water on it to get it open.. Even for a yankee city boy like me I think this qualifies as cold. I have a cord dangling out the second floor of my motel to the engine block heater.

Your advice is well taken. In the hood, I don't think the pressures will go up that much. But during a 600-700 mile drive home it might be different.
Thanks - this was helpful

Yeah - these tires are crap. And supposedly OFF-ROAD tires. My wheels spin on any snow or ice in 4WD mode. There was a guy in Prius who seemed to have better traction than me. I will not buy another set from Firestone.

When I head home I will dial them back per your advice.

It’s odd how that stuff works out, I’m originally from Cali, the last year I had my sled, we where in the back country in 4foot of Base with 2 feet of powder on top in late May early June and in T Shirts by noon.
