Hello gents.

Just got back from a long weekend up in the Pocono mountains in PA in our 2012 RAM 1500 Hemi with 83k miles on it. Had 61k when I bought it used in July 2016 - loving the truck so far! Truck drove fine all weekend and on the three hour drive home yesterday late afternoon - though I did notice about a 1-2MPG deficit coming home compared to past performance on this truck.

I unloaded our luggage and started it back up to park it and noticed a loud tick from the engine bay, first time I’ve heard it. Sounds like the infamous Hemi Tick I’ve heard so much about on this forum.

I got up and drove my son the three miles back and forth to school this morning and still heard it. Got home and backed into the driveway and noticed the idle getting rough. Had other things to do all day during daylight hours. Had time to get back out and start it up this afternoon. Oil levels are fine, first thing I checked. Tick still loud and apparent especially on the passenger side of the truck.

First thing I noticed is that it would start with remote start but then quit all on its own with a remote start disabled notification. That’s when I first noticed the CEL. I pulled the codes and it’s throwing a P0308 cylinder 8 misfire code. Still have the loud tick as well.

I have a Q-Certified powertrain warranty that came with the vehicle and I contacted the warranty company and arranged a diagnostic with the nearest RAM dealer but they can’t take me until next Wednesday especially since it’s a big holiday week.

Anything I can try myself in the interim? What should I start with? I’m thinking pull the plugs on that cylinder and replace them as a first step.

I need to check manifold bolts as well what with the tick. Could snapped manifold bolts somehow contribute to a P0308 code? Hopefully it’s not a lifter issue as that seems more complex to resolve. Any advice is most appreciated!

I'd let them handle it, but you can pull the coil pack and plug from 8 and see what's up.

Has it been rainy? Could be water causing the misfire usually a possibility with number 8, but the tick means it could be worse.

Yes it was cold and rainy up in the poconos and we were off-road on a couple of dirt and gravel mountain roads and trails earlier Sunday to do some hiking. How does the water contribute to the misfire? Curious.

The loud tick you hear may be the injector.

You can test the coil pak & wires by swapping over the cyl 8 pak & wires to another cylinder, then run it and see if that cylinder throws a code. If it does, you have a failed coil pak or wire.

I would not just replace one pair of plugs. Just do them all otherwise you'll be chasing P030X codes off and on until you end up changing them all. It's probably time, based on mileage, to change them out. Hopefully that takes care of the problem unless the coil pak and wire swap indicates that cylinder's set up has failed.

Plugs for your truck are the Mopar SPLZFR5C11.

Thanks Andrea, I will PM you if things don’t go as expected. I contacted another recommended dealer this morning who can perform the diagnostic tomorrow so I’m going to drop my truck off this evening.

Since I’m there already I plan to drive a 2017 RAM 1500 just to evaluate the newer interior and the drivetrain differences. I may consider trading up. [emoji1]

How, this I haven't really thought about, but I know it does and is a suspect in misfires especially on the back plugs. 30 years of owning 4x4's, I've seen this a few times. Just inspect the plug and let me know if there is visible water. If there is a water issue and corrosion around the spark plug hole, clean it out good and put plug back with a bunch of anti sieze, but be careful to not have it near the spark, or the coil pack/plug connection. This is a good argument for inspecting it, I don't know how motivated a dealer would be to clean it out as opposed to just changing the plug. x2 likely time to change all the plugs.

Thanks for the info MD. I was planning on doing the plugs over the holiday weekend however I expect the dealer will end up keeping the vehicle over the weekend as I doubt they will be able to complete the work by COB tomorrow, but we will see. I will probably end up doing the plugs myself the following weekend if the dealer doesn’t replace them all as part of the repair. I agree it’s time to have them done anyways. I’m just hoping the issue is ignition or fuel related and not something internal to the engine itself - but either way the powertrain warranty should cover it.

Dealer called this morning - ignition and fuel systems check out ok. They are pulling the valve cover off to check internals this afternoon.

Camshaft lobes were worn down due to failed lifters. Warranty company is asking for proof of proper maintenance so pulling the records and sending to the dealership today. Hoping I don’t run into any resistance on coverage.

I am dealing with this exact issue. What’s it going to cost to replace the camshaft lobes.

I also have a 2012(84,000 miles). My dodge started riding as if I was going over rumble strips or some kind of small bumps. As I got closer to home I started losing power and it finally died pulling into my driveway. Towed to shop and I have no compression in cylinder #3.

Sorry to hear that hitcher, what oil were you using?

Cam quotes with lifters seam to be around 7-8 g's from dealer, every once in a while you hear a 4-5 quote if you can get some ram assistance.

I don’t have a price yet from the dealer since we are both attempting to use the warranty. I sent off my maintenance records and am awaiting a response from the dealer and warranty company. The deductible on my warranty claim would be $200 so if the other posts are right about the costs anywhere from 4-8k total, and I am covered, I will consider myself very fortunate.

I’m using Pennzoil blended oil.

Sorry to hear that Marshall. Keep us posted on details. Just saw another poster with a 2013 model with similar issues. Hope your issue isn’t too expensive to repair. Are you under warranty still?

Hope that warranty covers it for you. Chrysler needs to be one responsible for this.

I'm having same problem now. There are a dozens of same cylinder misfire posts all over the forums. Primarily years 12-13 starting 70-80k miles.

For the record, RedLine oil didn't help my truck, and I've used it for the whole 70k miles
