I painted my driveshaft within hours of buying the truck. I planned ahead, and had Rustolium ready and waiting.

I painted everything that was bare metal, except the rotors, and the exhaust. The underneath of my truck still looks almost new.

Once a year, I get a new can of Rustolium and slide under the truck, and give it a good touch up. I do the same thing with the Wrangler and the Mustang.

The rust on the driveshaft isn’t really an issue unless it bothers you. Some of that metal is actually designed to develop a surface rust as a protectant to the underlying metal. Depending on your truck, it may have aluminum rear driveshaft as well.

Painting it definitely won’t hurt it though, you could even go crazy and paint it like a candy cane lol.

I have all of the exposed metal (Including frame) under My truck painted in Tremclad/rustoleum paint. Driveshaft was the first. I do the cv shafts as well. I touch up/re coat each year. I haven’t touched the driveshaft though in two years! She still looks like I did it yesterday!

I painted mine in weeks of buying the truck. had no rust yet. still looks good two and half years later. i just used rust-oleum black

Well I didn't have a choice buying mine with 27000 on it already... maybe just something to do on a hot day while I'm trying to stay under the truck

Well, I can also imagine when it's wet and spinning it's slinging rusty water everywhere... I'll have to use something safe enough to remove that rust tho.
Rustolium makes a good rust remover too tho.

Steel wool is what you'd probably want to use to clean up the rust on your driveshaft,if you don't have any laying around, steal a handful of SOS pads off your better half, she probably has a box of them under the kitchen sink, lol

If you have the aluminum version it won't rust. I think i said it last year that rust is actually protecting the metal underneath and it's normal. It's not the the cancer like chit you get in your rocker panels.
Don't sweat it unless you get negative points at the car show. If you don't have anything better to do then by all means get down there and work on it and make it that chit shine baby. I couldn't give 2 rats about them. Mine look rusty and i wear that color with pride.
Lol (DS and that exhaust Y pipe), the rest i'll take care of it with Rusteoloum or fluid film if it was needed. As you can see she's aging normally and there no rust where it would matter.

EE84AC21-01B3-469A-9E49-D11A84B0A8B6.jpeg Never had an issue with balance on the drive shaft. I heard about this before I did it, but said “I don’t give a damn” and went for it without any remorse! She came out fine! It’s dirty right now as she has been since I’ve been in isolation. Damn dirt roads only with 500 potholes per 1/2 mile!

Sounds like they must of run a grader down it recently if you're down to 500 potholes per 1/2 mile, lol

They just put some kind of “road leveller” down in on main road Two days agai to keep it smooth and the dust to minimal. Hence the 500 potholes lol. Some days are worse than others.
