Hi folks, I have a 2018, 3500, 6.7 diesel, with duallys on an 8 foot bed. Trying to obtain a max payload number. I have a cabover camper with a dry weight of 3,990. lbs and as tempting as it is to load the camper with all kinds of toys, I am concerned with going over the safe limit. Your thoughts are appreciated.
Thanks
Tom

Truck has a 14,000 GVWR. Go weigh the truck at a scale house with every thing you normally would have in the cab. For example, if it weighs 9,000#s then you can add 5k in cargo. What you will want to also watch is do not go over the rear axle weight rating which may be 9,750#s. Front may be 6,000. These are the numbers for my 2018 Limited Crewcab Dually.

Check weights at a scale and door jam.
Quick impression is your dancing at the limits.

I think that was an 1165, so 4900+ pounds dry, then putting that motor cycle out there at the end of a long lever. I’d like to know what it scaled out at.

Some guy in Canada with a big truck camper and a trailer broke the frame on an F350, moved it all to an F450 and broke that. Making changes that pull the center of gravity behind the rear axle seems to be a very bad idea.

Yeah I think this was brought in as a warning to this thread, I remember seeing the original thread on here.

And you're right, anything that moves the COG behind the rear axle is a no-go, which this guy did by putting such a heavy camper on the truck to begin with, then adding the motorcycle to the rear. He should have went with a motorcycle trailer instead.

My dad has had truck campers for years, mostly for hunting but he's also used it for cross-country trips. He's got a little tag-trailer that he pulls behind it (I think it's rated to 2500 lbs MAYBE? He uses it to haul gasoline, generator, tree stand, and like a shovel/rake/axe), and has never had any issues whether it be with a GMC 3500 or his F450. Doing it right saves you a lot of money, and doesn't make you a safety hazard on the road.

Not saying this not overloaded or anything.........but how you use the truck makes a big difference. From my memory the original article stated this guy was doing very long distance driving down in Baja Mexico. Probably a big difference between running a couple hundred miles down I-75 versus maybe running a couple thousand miles through Mexico and the roads down there!

IIRC that truck was overloaded by 2000lbs from what I read. Read that payload on that truck was only around 5000lbs but he was closer to 7000lbs but 'assumed' he was fine cause a stripped down 3500 2WD regular cab gasser has 7000lbs payload
