Photobucket now totally sucks balls and I'm so done with them. They insisted I update my plan from the legacy setup I had, for twice the money, since the old site wasn't accessible anymore. I'm pretty sure they did that on purpose.

So first up is Google Photos

That's a lot of linking and clicking just to post a photo here. Yup, I can "Upload a file" here but on some legacy sites you still need an [/IMG] link.

I don't mind paying something reasonable to be able to link to pics.

OK...moving on to SmugMug. Easy to use, charges $48/year for a basic plan.

Easy right click on the photo linking:

Yeah...easy to use. Now to find out what the storage limit is.

Did some research on rates and user tools.

    1 SmugMug:

Basic $5.99/mo or $47.88 paid annually

Power $8.99 per month or $71.88 paid annually

Portfolio $23.99 per month or $179.88 paid annually

Pro is $41.99 per month or $359.88 paid annually

SmugMug has no limit on the amount of storage. The pricing differs based on the tools available at each price point. The Basic plan exceeds what was available from Photobucket and there are no hassles such as poor response times, partial loading, lack of support and their bait & switch tactics.

    2. PhotoShelter - Basic = $10/month, Standard = $25/month, Pro = $45/month Basic tools and features, similar to SmugMug with additional tools for professional photographers.

    2. InMotion - $4.99/month after you purchase your website domain, create a website and subscribe to a hosting service. Basically an add-on for your self managed website.

    3. Google Photos - Minimal basic services, no direct [/IMG] links available, no fees charged, limited ability to manage photos, folders or galleries.

    4. Flikr - Free service with limited tools and organization features. Storage limit is 1,000 images and from there incremental fees will be charged.

    5. Imgur - Another free service that compresses photos larger than 1MB into "lossy" formats so images posted on websites from Imgur won't reflect the actual quality of your original photo.

Why not just get a new domain for this website or just to host images yourselves and just pay the yearly fee of hosting and you guys can offer image hosting here ... it will be much cheaper and you can host all you want for free and you never have to worry about the images getting lost ...

I've been using vgy ( www.vgy.me ) for a few years. It's a simple but free site and is easy to use.

This test and research was for sharing my own personal images and not to develop a RamForum/Fully Driven Network image hosting service. It was precipitated by Photobucket's deplorable service.

My image and document repository won't get lost as I have RAID 2 NAS backups with an additional external HD added as a third backup.

The issue is that there are some legacy V-Bulletin websites I frequent that still require an [/IMG] URL to upload a pic. You can "attach" an image but there is a limit on the number and total size of attachments on those websites. And, an attachment is usually a thumbnail size.

On most Xenforo websites there is an option for users to "Upload a File" which allows you to upload a full sized image without needing the [/IMG] URL.
