I have the stock 17in rims and tires. I like them but think they would be nicer black. Will the tires have to be dismounted so the rims can be powder coated black?

Yes, as the entire wheel will be coated to avoid any peeling at the edges.

And in-case you are on the fence about powdercoating, It's totally worth it. It's a very inexpensive way to get the look you want. The longevity, strength, and other rust retention properties of powdercoating are serious +1's.

Post some pics of the wheels before and after you mount the tires again! I love powercoat **** :naughty:

If you're not sure about the color, Plasti Dip is the way to go. It can been peeled off if you don't like the color. Plus, you do not have to dismount the tires - you can just leave them on and plasti dip your rims!

anyone have an idea of what these would look like on a two tone black with grey trim..... possibly what shade of greyish to coat... i think darker rims would also look good on my truck, but its throwing me off with the grey fenders and rockers

hmmm....well, my current setup on the SRT8 looks like this, a Cardinal "Silvervein" powdercoat on the face and spokes, matte black on the backside and inside barrel, then a 2mil clearcoat all the way around:

I didn't want black because I didn't want the wheels to disappear nor did I like the stock finish which looked like this:

It took a week to get them done but was busy tearing the car apart anyway so no rush:

In any event, I kinda liked the results and I did the powdercoating back in 2008. The finish is still good, no peeling and no issues at all.

If you are unsure on color go with the plastidip route until you have your mind made up. Then do powder

Yes I recommend that you dismount the tires before painting the rims.

That's pretty sweet, so is it like a hammered look/feel?

Exactly. The 2 mil clearcoat smoothed it out some but it still has a profile you can feel.

I wanted to get mine powdercoated but I was told that you can't do 2 colors because of the process in which the powder is applied. I'm stuck with plasti-dip until I change my mind.

Then get them professional painted. With good quality auto paint it will be fine.

Powdercoating is great, no doubt I have some engine parts powdercoated but painting them with automotive paint works too.

Here are my stockers, powder coated textured flat black. It's been about a year and they look like the day they were done. Plus, I don't even need to clean them... just spray them off at the car wash. I have wiped them down maybe 3-4 times in the last year.

I need to get some 17's and drag radials so I can do this with my 20s.

Just curious, what should I expect to pay per rim to have 20" Sport rims powdercoated?
