hey guys im new to the forum and im looking into doing something for my wheels. im not sure if i want to get them powdercoated or if i want to plastidip them myself. has anyone attempted this? which one would be best and last longest, and what are the pros and cons of these options. thanks guys!

Plenty of people have plastidipped, as well as powder coat. Powdercoat without a doubt is the stronger and longer lasting of the two. That said, plastidip has the advantage if you decide you want to change back, it's as simple as pulling it off; where as with the powder coat, you'd sooner buy different wheels. Powder coat is more costly, but you have your choice of colors while plastidip is typically done up in black.

Attached is a photo of my powder coated 20's...

plasti dip will last for quiet some time, but not nearly as long as powder coat, but plasti dip is one, a lot cheaper, and 2 can come off if it doesn't come out like you wanted it.

What I would do is use plastidip to see if you like the look. If you like it, then have them powdercoated for a more permanent and longer lasting finish.

I have done a LOT with Plasti-Dip...my Ram wheels are powdercoated but my Challenger wheels are PD black and love the look...also did emblems, truck grille, door handles and mirror housings...trim...lots of stuff.

A good tip...PREP is important...clean with soap and water. Dry 100%. Then I clean with a watered down alcohol in spray bottle and wipe down. Let it completely dry...if you have a compressor maybe even run some air pressure over it to be sure.
Spray LIGHT coats for the first 2-3...then a bit heavier for the 4th and on coats...I like to use a whole can for each 18-20" wheel. Let it dry about 10 minutes between coats...after the last one let it dry about an hour before putting it back on the truck...and even then be careful.

Won't last forever but looks great and costs like $30-$35 to do all your wheels. Can't beat that. if it doesn't look great it peels off no harm done. Powder coating will take a few days without wheels on your truck...and costs about 10 times more...and it also chips and cannot be easily repaired. If some of my dip tears I can put some thinner on it to smooth it out...spray a few coats on and looks like NEW for $5.

Check out dipyourcar.com if you want to see some whole cars dipped. They have Plasti Dip in a bunch of colors now, and even sell kits to do a whole car/truck.
