I have a 2022 Ram pickup with 5.7 L std V8. I started with premium gas - 93 octane as I thought in the long run it would be better for the engine. Manual says regular gas 87 octane is ok.

Now I'm at 6.00 per gallon, the 33 gallon tank is $200.00.

Does anyone know how it impacts the engine to switch back to regular? What are the negatives?

It doesn't. I've gone to 89 as I've noticed enough of a fuel economy improvement vs 87 to offset the extra cost, but premium to 89 I notice no difference. As I understand it the engine management will adjust for 87 octane fuel, but will run at it's peak on 89 or better.

I have a 2019 Ram 1500 5.7 HEMI 8spd trans and here in Ontario Canada we are paying roughly $2.10 a Liter = to be about $7.99 a Gallon for regular unleaded 87 octane so needless to say I am running 87 in my 5.7 1500 ! it cost me $150.00 from 3/4 of a tank and i stopped the pump when it got to that ! gauge read full but i know it was not full full ! if you know what i mean ! now don't get me wrong i notice the power difference between the two but willing to sacrifice a lil power for now
when i pull my camper i will bite the bullet and put 89 in her but to drive as my daily driver 87 works! with no issues

My 21 5.7 runs like crap on 87. Knocks fairly often.
I'd be curious to see data logs for your fuel trim and timing, seems "fairly often" is too often. Knock sensors should be preventing pre-ignition. Are you loaded heavy all the time?

93 is unnecessary for a stock N/A 5.7. If your manual specifies 89 run that but 87 should work as well as long as your not always "in it" ( heavy throttle or hauling heavy). Alter your driving habits to adjust for the lower grade fuel. Easy take offs, w/ moderate throttle application. When prices swing back to normal ( like they mostly have for the last ...almost 45 years) let that puppy sing with 89.

Don’t waste you good $’s on premium. No problem switching back, just do it.

I live in Utah and use 85 octane in every engine I own to include my BMWk1600gte motorcycle. Yes, occasionally the motor will ping and I simply use less throttle. I refuse to pay additional for fuel except in the fall (before storing for the winter) when I use "blue gas" for a few tanks to get the ethanol out of the system before the motorcycle sits for a few months.

I'm glad I saw this question, as I was just thinking along similar lines.
I'm going to open this question up, just a little bit.
I have a 2022 power wagon with the 6.4 And in our family we also have a 2021 warlock with the 5.7
In both trucks, since new I have been using 91 octane That is ethanol free, As there's a local gas station that still sells ethanol free gas.
Now the manual for the 6.4 says 89 min.
I can't find anywhere (Yet I have to admit I haven't looked that hard) For the new 5.7 where it says it needs 89, Yet I believe even in a 4th Gen. 5.7 I had, I believe it did say recommended 89 octane but I could be wrong.
Anyway my question is similar to the original question, yet it is almost 2 different questions.
Is there any benefits to running 91 ethanol free, Versus 89 with 10% ethanol for either the 6.4 or the 5.7? Versus 89 with 10% ethanol for either the 6.4 l or the 5.7?
Anecdotally Both the engines seem to run better on the 91 And I believe it being ethanol free is just a bonus.
I am considering going down to the 89 with The 10% ethanol, at least in the 5.7 and maybe the 6.4 as well.

What made you think premium would "be better"? An ad on tv? Use what the manual calls for which is 87 or 89 "for best performance". If anything overuse of premium can call for depositing, especially in the high pressure direct injection systems of the hemis and any engine using such. Go back to 87 and you will save at least 15% on fuel costs and lose zero performance or drivability.

The 5.7 requires 87 but "recommends for best performance" 89. Use the 87 regular and you are complying with the manual and a bit fuller wallet.

Engine Masters did a dyno test of different grades of gas to show it didn't amount to much at all and not worth the cost of premium in normally aspirated engines. It made more HP and torque on E85 than on 116 Octane racing fuel. LS3 6.2L crate motor, 10.7:1 compression. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryqyTPfNj1Q

Not to be insulting, but only a dummy will pay for premium fuel when the manual does not call for it. I use 87 unless I am towing then 89.
