How difficult would it be to place some 6.5 component mids in the front doors? I've got a set of Boston Acoustics laying around, but am not sure how much work would be involved making a round speaker work in an oval hole.

Get a 6x9 adapter plate for 12 bucks off amazon and trim to fit your speaker if you have to, its that easy.

Or grab a scrap piece of wood from the garage, cut out (even a very rough) oval and then two mounting circles. the comp set will include mounting templates you can trace onto the oval to get just the right size cutout.

I spent about 4 minutes and my router making my set for my car a couple weeks ago LOL

BTW- if you make your own try using plywood instead of MDF like we tend to everywhere else in car audio. It stands up much better to all the moisture in doors.

It will be easy if you don't have the OE Alpine Amp. You can make your own template out of MDF, Birch, or cutting boards. I prefer the latter in case moisture gets in the doors. How do you plan to power them? I'd suggest temporary mounting solutions for the tweeter -- until you find the sweet spot. Many don't sound good in the dash. If you have OE Alpine, you are screwed (in for a lot more money and hassle).

If you dont want to make your own, just buy some adapters. They're cheap.
Make sure to buy some without mounting holes if you can.
Pre-drilled holes prob wont match up to the rams factory mounting holes on inner door card, and Boston Acoustics' mounting holes may be different too.
Drilling your own holes is easy enough.
I had some very old school Boston Pro 6.5's back in the day... They were awesome. Wish i still had those!

Thanks guys. How much room is there in front of the speaker to the factory grill? I'm thinking the mounting depth on these is probably 3.5-4"

I'm interested in mounting depth as well. Can you put a 3/4" MDF spacer allowing for more depth without hitting the door?

Mounting Depth is:

Front = 2.75"
Rear = 2"

Got those from crutchfield.

I replaced my dash speakers with the tweeters in my setup. Made a bracket out of plexi-glass by tracing out the pattern from the stock speaker. Turned out real good, just an idea...

Front is pretty shallow. When using an adapter/spacer, it too has to be pretty thin -- otherwise many tweeters will hit the grill in the door panel. There's no way you can use 3/4" MDF unless your speaker frame is paper-thin, and the tweeter doesn't stick out at all.

I thought I read the rear doors were about an inch deeper than the fronts? I haven't pulled a rear door panel yet, but plan to soon.

I would only mount a woofer, no tweeter and it would be a 7" ScanSpeak. I would be running 3-way active with a Helix DSP and my JL HD amps.
