Just picked up a winter project for cheap, a 2001 2500 4x4 gas truck. The dash is lit up like a christmas tree :) The CEL is just evap (could even be just the gas cap) so ABS is on top of the list.

Two questions:

Did anybody successfully read ABS codes with something else than the DRB-III or similar high end tools ? I use a Bosch reader (claims to read ABS codes on 'most' Chryslers from 1996 on) and when it goes through reading ABS codes it has the exact truck year/model/drivetrain as a selection but it still fails.

Given that the speedo works is it fair to assume there is no issue with the rear sensor ? Aside from the front sensors any more obscure points of failure ?

Thx !

To answer the second question: No. The rear sensor tested 'open' but the speedo worked. There is no sensor at the transfer case output so I'd guess the front wheel sensors are used to generate the speedometer signal.

Front wheel sensors are only on a very select few 4wheel abs trucks. Not common at all. Speed sensor is in the top of the diff and is what the speedo goes off.

ABS could still be the rear sensor, could be the front if you have 4 wheel abs, can also be the whole proportioning system in the engine bay. Most common being the axle, rarest being the proportioning
